Federal Loan Updates
On May 4, the SBA announced that the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans had run out before its planned May 31 deadline. On April 22, the SBA launched a new round of Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) assistance called Supplemental Targeted Advances. These advances will provide another $5 billion in additional assistance to 1 million small businesses and nonprofits that have been most severely affected by the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. To qualify for the Supplemental Targeted Advance, an eligible business entity must be in a low-income community, suffered greater than 50 percent economic loss, and have 10 or fewer employees. SBA will contact eligible business entities to apply.
FEMA Assistance
Under the COVID-19 nationwide emergency declaration, some nonprofits are eligible to apply for assistance under the FEMA Public Assistance (PA) Program. The Public Assistance Program reimburses communities for actions taken in response to a disaster. More information about eligibility can be found here. On January 21, 2021, the President issued the “Memorandum to Extend Federal Support to Governors’ Use of the National Guard to Respond to COVID-19 and to Increase Reimbursement and Other Assistance Provided to States”, which authorized FEMA to provide funding to applicants for the safe opening and operation of eligible facilities. Such assistance “may include funding for the provision of personal protective equipment and disinfecting services and supplies.” More information is available here and here.

Why Nonprofits Should Move Beyond 2-Hour DEI Workshops
|
|
Many nonprofits beginning their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) start with holding a workshop. A workshop can be the start, but it should not end there. As Sharon Maylor Ph.D., YW Boston’s Organizational Development Manager, explains, “If you are looking to frustrate your staff, only do a workshop. They will ask ‘what's next?’”
Sharon works with organizations as they develop and implement their DEI action plans. She also supports with facilitating workshops. So, we sat down with her to get a clear picture of when workshops can be beneficial to an organization, and why they must always be followed by longer-term commitments.
