Health Services for Staff and Students

News From the Library

The library is rolling! Our group study rooms have been fully booked at several points throughout the day the week, and students are getting creative with how they use the space. We love seeing the collaboration going on! Remember that study rooms can be reserved in person OR online through our website, under "Need space to gather?"

OER is on our minds this fall, and we are encouraging any faculty member who may be curious about lowering the material costs for their students to reach out to a librarian for information about OER in their areas. The Chancellor's office and ASCCC are aggressively funding grants and programs statewide, and new materials become available every semester. If you ever wondered when a good time would be to make the switch to OER... now is that time!

We also want to call on faculty tour our collection to recommend new and up-to-date materials in your area of expertise. Our collection should reflect the most current and relevant information for our students, and your subject expertise is invaluable to our collection. Don't be shy and come talk to us. We are happy to work with you!

Join Us for Tea and Open House

Please join us for two events on Oct. 11. From 4-6pm the Academic Senate is hosting Tenure Tea in the Library.

The Vallejo Center will host a "Re-Open House" event from 5:30-7:30pm.

Solano Theatre Presents "Pinned Butterfly"

Solano College Theatre Presents "Pinned Butterfly," which started September 23 and runs through October 2. The play is directed by Trey Reeves.

The story follows a local gay pride group which arranges a pride march, but their leader, Michael Cutter, wants to make it about something more personal. As Cutter tries to lead a war against the bisexual community, members of his group begin to have realizations about themselves and each other, while also being torn apart by the conflict and hate that Cutter insists is necessary.

Officer Dayrit Makes a Friend

Birds need love and protection also! While on routine patrol on the exterior of the Vacaville Center recently, a small but very cute bird landed in front of Officer Dayrit and it appeared dazed. Officer Dayrit bent down and extended his hand out to the bird to see if it was okay. The bird hopped right into the palm of his hand and would not leave, so he carried his new friend, and protected his new friend, while he completed his exterior security check of the building.

After spending time with Officer Dayrit and perhaps feeling safe enough to fly away, they parted ways.

We wish the birdie well until they meet again!

Interview with the DPS Chief

Department of Public Safety Chief Brian Travis was recently interviewed for the "Campus Safety Report" published by Wiley, a global leader in publishing, education and research for higher education. The main editor of Wiley, Halley Sutton, heard about the programs we have at DPS from a couple of her colleagues, so she reached out to the chief for an interview. Read the report, which begins on page 3.

Guided Pathways Events

The coordination team for Guided Pathways Solano (“GPS”) is working with department faculty to present our first “GPS Program Showcase”—an in-reach event designed to familiarize current SCC students with some of the college’s many excellent programs. Participating programs will offer virtual information sessions via Zoom the first week of November, and on-campus drop-in activities the following week. The early November timing will give students an opportunity to learn about programs prior to choosing their Spring 2023 classes. While the November showcase will feature only a dozen or so programs, a longer-term goal is to build from this to a campus-wide open house in Spring, for current and prospective students. To get involved in these efforts, please contact Melissa Reeve: mreeve@solano.edu.

Student Athlete Orientation

The Welcome Back Student Athlete Orientation was attended by approx. 80 student athletes and their coaching staff.

In addition to introducing the new Falcon, Men’s Tennis was awarded the AD Award with a team GPA of 3.64, Big 8 North Conference Title, Doubles in CCCAA Play offs and an Arthur Ashe Leadership Award winner.

After the introductions in the gymnasium, the student athletes participated in a tour of the Library and ASTC.

Report Phishing in Outlook

We have added a new feature to your Outlook that allows you to report suspected phishing attempts. It helps alert Microsoft so they can improve their filtering of malicious emails. You will notice a new icon on the Outlook ribbon at the top:

If you receive an email that you believe is phishing, click this button, and it will ask you to confirm:

If you use the web version of Outlook, a similar feature is available:

Some things to watch for to determine if an email is phishing:

-       It says you need to login to reset your password, or that your account is expiring

-       It claims to be from someone with IT, or another part of the college, but the warning banner says the sender is outside of the organization

-       It includes an invoice for something you know you did not order personally
