VICA Advocates for Van Nuys Airport at LAWA Board of Commissioners Meeting

At Thursday's Los Angeles World Airport (LAWA) Board of Airport Commissioners meeting at Van Nuys Airport, VICA provided public comment supporting the Van Nuys Airport (VNY), underscoring the significant economic contributions of VNY. Addressing the commissioners, VICA highlighted the airport's pivotal role in the regional economy, generating approximately $2 billion annually and supporting over 10,000 jobs. Victor Reyes, VICA Legislative Affairs Manager emphasized VNY's critical function in relieving operational loads at neighboring airports and its essential role in business connectivity and emergency response efforts.

Reyes also articulated appreciation for the airport's collaborations with community organizations like VICA, which have been crucial in fostering economic development and initiating projects that bolster both the airport's growth and the local economy. He concluded by thanking the commissioners for their ongoing support of initiatives that maximize VNY's role as a cornerstone of regional development and connectivity. The discussion underscored the airport's vital contributions to the community's economic vitality and global reach.

VICA Urges Governor Newsom for Permanent Family Leave Mediation Program, Supporting AB 2011

VICA has actively supported Assembly Bill 2011 (Bauer-Kahan), which seeks to permanently establish the Civil Rights Department’s small employer-family leave mediation program. Recognizing the value of this program, VICA submitted a letter to Governor Gavin Newsom urging him to sign the bill into law. The program, initially a pilot, has been crucial in providing a resolution mechanism outside of the courtroom for family leave disputes involving small employers.

AB 2011 aims to extend the mediation program's benefits, enhancing protections for workers and small businesses in California. It also seeks to include provisions for reproductive loss leave, addressing new requirements and supporting employers and employees in managing sensitive circumstances. By making this program permanent, AB 2011 ensures continued access to fair and efficient dispute resolution, helping to prevent costly and time-consuming litigation.

VICA continues to advocate for legislation supporting the business community while ensuring both can thrive in California’s dynamic economy. The Government Affairs Committee will further discuss this matter at our next meeting, underscoring our commitment to impactful advocacy in legislative developments.
