The College & Development Combine kicked off today with multiple on-ice practices, off-ice training sessions, and informational seminars. This camp is a great opportunity for the coaches to not only evaluate the talent, but also educate them on what it takes to be a high level player on and off the ice in regards to training, nutrition, habits, fundamentals, etc.

Today's practices started with skating, passing and shooting fundamentals that also incorporated competitive small-area games. Both sessions today touched on many on-ice skills, but the afternoon sessions primarily honed in on position specific skills. The coaches split the players in half of the ice. A skills-specific session in which the forwards and defensemen split into separate halves of the ice and work on the finer points of their position-specific skills. During these sessions, proper playing habits are emphasized in each of the station-based drills.

The older boys also took part in a yoga session, instructed by Joanna Perez. Yoga helps to improve flexibility, mobility, and balance which are fundamental aspects towards moving fluidly, explosively, and efficiently out on the ice.

The Development Camp had a fun off-ice session of soccer and kick ball, led by our UCONN players.

There were eight total on-ice sessions today ran by coaches from the NHL, NCAA, Junior A and Prep School levels.

Today's coaches included;

  • Brian Strait - New Jersey Devils (NHL)
  • Will Messa - Long Island University (NCAA/D1)
  • Mike Corbett - Quinnipiac University (NCAA/D1)
  • Steve Bergin - Sacred Heart University (NCAA/D1)
