SAVING JACK

AN OUTREACH SUCCESS STORY & CALL TO ACTION

The story of Jack, a 13-year-old Brittany, is a testament to the power of connectivity, compassion, and the swift action of the American Brittany Rescue (ABR) Outreach Group. This journey began when a vigilant volunteer in Georgia alerted our network that a Brittany needed help in Alaska. This cross-country alert initiated a series of outreach efforts that demonstrate the incredible reach and effectiveness of our community.

Through our strategic use of social media, including posts in the Brittany Dogs of Alaska Facebook group, we rallied Brittany enthusiasts to spread the word about Jack. It was these efforts that led to Jack being adopted directly from the shelter in just one day. Although he was not adopted through ABR directly, it was the rapid mobilization of ABR volunteers and the broader community that facilitated his adoption in a record-breaking time.

Jack's rescue underscores the importance of our mission and the potential to achieve extraordinary outcomes when we work together. His story is a shining example of what can happen when compassion meets action. His adoption into a Brittany-loving home was the best outcome, made possible by the collective efforts of individuals who share our love and commitment to Brittanys.

This rescue is not just a milestone for Jack but also a call to action for others. We hope his story will inspire more individuals to join the American Brittany Rescue Outreach Group. Our aim is to establish a network of volunteers across every state and throughout Canada dedicated to aiding Brittanys in their communities and getting the word out about ABR. We believe that with at least one volunteer focusing on outreach in each state, we can replicate this success story many times over, ensuring that more Brittanys find their forever homes.

Jack’s journey from an urgent alert to a loving home overnight is a reminder of the difference we can make. It celebrates the collaborative spirit of the American Brittany Rescue and highlights our commitment to the well-being of every Brittany. We invite you to join us in this mission, to be part of a movement that not only saves lives but enriches them, one Brittany at a time. Together, we can continue to create happy endings and provide Brittanys with the loving homes they deserve.

REMEMBERING CURLY

By Ron and Ann Fruth

Curly’s story is one of people who not only care, but who act to help others. Without Leslie Anderson and her father, Curly’s story would have had a very different ending. They persuaded his very neglectful and recalcitrant owner to surrender him to ABR. Safe with ABR, he went to a wonderful foster home where Jim De Knight, his wife Carolyn, and their daughter Gwen showed him what it meant to have a home and be loved. By Jim’s account, he was a quick learner and without hesitation showed lots of appreciation and affection for the family. With the De Knight family he came to understand the life that he wanted and deserved.

For us, he was an affectionate, snuggly, fun-loving boy, ever willing to do whatever it was that we were doing. He always stayed close to us. We walked, went to the beach, visited neighbors, and spent weekends at state parks. He loved fresh cold water with ice cubes and sleeping with us.

He was a wonderful boy and we are honored he was part of our family. We are very grateful to all who helped him find his way to us. His journey with us was a joy. We tried to fill every day with love and fun. He was a delightful boy and ever loyal to us.  He leaves us with warm memories and a hole in our hearts.

Sad as we are and painful as it is to lose them, we will never hesitate to adopt another older dog. They more than any deserve a life of comfort and love. Senior Britts are the best and second chances rock!

In Curly’s honor we give many thanks to all that helped him on his journey to the place where he belonged, in our home and in our hearts.

FROM OUR INBOX

From time-to-time ABR sends us wonderful stories about Britts, their escapades, sad stores with happy endings, foster families, and other victories achieved by ABR. A couple of months ago you requested remembrances and tributes. I held off because Joyce and I were expecting Rocket (aka, Bub, Bubbers, Rock-Rock) to cross the bridge soon. That was about a year ago.

So, here is a tribute to a remarkable Brittany. We adopted Rocket when he was turning 8 years old. On June 26 he will turn 17 (we hope). Along the way he has acquired the usual weakening of the hind legs, a partially dislocated front shoulder, diminished vision…Yet this boy refuses to give up. He demands his morning walk of up to one-half mile with his young sister (Java is only 14). The daily routine continues as normal. Of course, his naps are greatly extended. We all know that these Britts are devoted and stubborn, but without my amazing wife Joyce there is no doubt that Rocket would no longer be with us.

Joyce routinely rises before 5:30am to take the pups out, along with many trips outside to relieve himself and stroll about around our one-acre backyard. Bub receives his multiple meds on a strict schedule every day. Joyce also provides all-day support and care for his wanderings about the house. Finally, we all know the importance of nutrition. Well, Rocket often has trouble standing to eat, so Joyce will hand-feed him as needed.

Not unlike the other three Britts we have had it is impossible to fully describe the joy Rocket has brought to this family.

ADOPT A BRITTANY

Merle - NE – 6 y/o:

Looking for a running buddy? Merle may be your guy! He is a big and fit high energy boy who does not do well in a confined settling, including the house. He is a free spirit who wants to explore and be outside always. He does enjoy chewing on his Nylabones right next to his people, too! If you have the time to give Merle the exercise and stimulation he needs, please submit an application.

Adopt Merle

Jackson (3 y/o) - WA: Jackson is an awesome little boy that loves everyone he meets after he gets over his shyness. Jackson’s foster and the resident Brittanys fell in love with him the moment he arrived. Jackson was so excited to play! Jackson has had an in-house obedience class and is crate and potty trained. Jackson eats from a special bowl and diet because he has a sensitive tummy so he needs his food to set for a couple of minutes with warm water in it. Jackson is looking for a new home with a big yard to play in and a Brittany friend to play with. Are you ready to welcome Jackson to his Furever home?

Adopt Jackson

Styles (2 y/o) - NJ: Howdy, everyone! I am looking for a family I can spend all my time with. If you are retired or work from home, let’s meet! I need someone who enjoys long walks and lots of outdoor time, and who will give me reinforcements to keep my obedience training on track. I am good at heel, place, kennel and of course snuggling- my most favorite thing! I would love a sister to play with- older is good- to show me the ropes. So what do you say? If you need endless snuggles and a shadow to spend your time with, I am waiting to fill that spot!
