I'm sure you have heard it, maybe even said it: "Boy, these people are not very friendly" as you walk into a room filled with people you have never met before. True, some groups feel they are exclusive and will welcome no one who is not a part of it.

For the most part, most people are a bit shy and reluctant to take that first step. At the same time people need people and want to be around people. They want to feel someone cares.

Be that someone even if it is just saying hi and smiling. Be friendly and cheerful and most will respond in kind. Strike up a conversation with someone who may not be actively involved in a conversation with others. Yes, there is a delicate balance between butting in and becoming involved in a conversation.

To have a friend you must be a friend. As the old AT&T jungle said "Reach out and touch someone." This week, be the one to take the first step. You will be amazed at the friends you will make.
