Human Rights Law and Community Accessibility
Last month NYAIL hosted a webinar with John Herrion, Director of Disability Rights, New York State Division of Human Rights. The webinar provided an overview of New York State Human Rights Law and filing complaints related to public accommodation.
If you have experienced discrimination as a customer or client of any establishment offering goods or services to the public (for example: stores, theatres, restaurants, transportation services, public buildings, salons, medical offices, daycare services, parks, fitness and recreation facilities, etc., including any such facilities owned or operated by a governmental entity) you are covered by NYS Human Rights Law. Discrimination can include simple access issues like a one-step entrance to a business that prevents access.

Housing & Source of Income Discrimination
Source of Income discrimination remains a barrier to housing that is frequently reported. Watch our webinar on housing discrimination to learn about all types of discrimination or the Division of Human Rights short explanation of Source of Income discrimination.

Juneteenth
with NYAIL's 2022 Webinar Series
In recognition of Juneteenth and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (D.E.I.) work we're welcoming Keri Gray to present the NYAIL webinars for June and July.

Keri’s work centers on exploring the intersections of race, gender, and disability across the workplace. We're excited to welcome Keri to our webinar series and as a part of the ongoing work on D.E.I. in our community. We hope you'll join us on June 30th and July 13th. ASL interpretation and captioning are included at both events. More details are at the links below.
Thank you to our NYAIL 2022 Webinar Series sponsor Waymo!
Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to get where they’re going. We believe that fully autonomous technology holds the promise to improve road safety and offer new mobility options to millions of people. This is why we're designing the Waymo Driver, our autonomous technology, to give people a new kind of freedom – to go where they want, when they want, while making the frustrations and concerns with driving a thing of the past.
Statewide Independent Living Needs You
Your input is needed for this year’s independent living consumer needs survey. Your answers will help make sure that your needs are included in the statewide plan for services.

The New York State Independent Living Council, Inc. (NYSILC) is a statewide organization that develops a plan for Centers for Independent Living (CILs) to serve people with disabilities in New York State. The consumer needs survey is used to develop this plan.

You could also win one of FIVE $50 Amazon gift cards if you “opt-in” during the survey. Survey responses will be kept completely confidential and only the aggregated data will be reported.
The New York State Independent Living Council (NYSILC) is seeking candidates interested in serving as volunteer council members beginning in 2023.

The primary responsibility of the council is to develop and monitor the State Plan for Independent Living, which is the blueprint for the programs and services that help New Yorkers with disabilities live independent, integrated lives in the community. NYSILC is seeking candidates to replace seven outgoing members. Council members are appointed to three-year terms. New members are assigned mentors to assist with onboarding and acclimation.

NYSILC aims to be representative of New York’s population and seeks diverse membership, including individuals with various disabilities, races/ethnicities, ages, and gender identification, geographically located throughout the state.

  • Candidates must respond by June 30, 2022.
NYAIL administers several statewide and regional programs in collaboration with its member ILCs, all of which are focused on helping people with disabilities live independently in the community.
