At great restaurants, what's on the wall is increasingly as vital as what's on the plate—so says William Li, Town and Country Magazine, April 2022. And, we couldn't agree more! In our main house, we have an interesting collection of paintings and objets d'art on display... we're not your typical Vermont inn. The photo is the interior at Daniel, New York, and the large-scale landscapes exhibit is by Alex Katz.

Our friend and croquet champion, Kim Beaty, will take us on an informative and entertaining retrospective journey regaling us with tales of her most interesting adventures as a portrait artist.

Grant's Cottage—Fascinating
Impoverished by a Ponzi-style swindle and dying of throat cancer, Ulysses S. Grant moved to the Cottage on June 16, 1885. With the help from his publisher Mark Twain, and the nation at large, he completed Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant only days before his death on July 23, 1885. Steve, our tour-guide, was incredibly inspirational. After touring the home, wait until you see the historic views. And, only nine miles north of downtown Saratoga Springs.

1951 International Harvester Metro
This restored1951 Snap-on Tools International Metro Van really caught my attention a few weeks back—so much that it had to be included in this month’s newsletter. I’m always delighted to receive the Vermont based Hemmings Auction email—it's a feel-good moment that takes me back to my youth for 5-10 minutes a few times a week. Sign up, it’s free. Pears Transparent Soap
Most, if not all hotels and inns use small bar soap, generally from .75 -1.50 oz bars, and so did we. This year, we want our guests to feel more comfortable. So, we changed to Pears Soap, an elegant, generously sized 4.4 oz bar that sits comfortably in your hand with nice rounded edges. Pears Transparent Soap is a British brand of soap first produced and sold in 1807 by Andrew Pears, at a factory just off Oxford Street in London.

A beautiful 64-mile ride though the Vermont countryside that takes you just over the border—make sure that you take the Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge, connecting Vermont and New Hampshire. Then, step into the world of one of America’s greatest artists… Augustus Saint-Gaudens, lived here seasonally starting in 1885, and year-round 1900 until his death in 1907. Experience the park grounds, where several of Saint-Gaudens bronze sculptures are on view throughout the year, & trails wind through the woods. Click here to remember his importance. This is another must-visit!

Samuel Makes Our Butter & Cheese… But Not on Sunday! |

Another Stumble-Upon Moment… We interrupted Samuel from building his third, modestly sized, nicely designed chicken coop. No power tools, no electricity on a quiet farm—and, he sells butter too—from his Ice House... Now, with butter-in-hand, Kay’s asking about cheese… “What kind of cheese do you make, Cheddar?” “No, just cheese,” Samuel replied. We picked up his cheese the following week and it was still warm—it was good basic cheese. Samuel is our new butter and cheese guy! Join us the next time we make a butter run...

Summer's Here When Roxies Opens! |

We met Amanda by chance a month ago after ordering hamburgers and a small cone. Amanda’s great grandmother purchased Roxies from Earl Wilson, nicknamed “Roxie” in 1957 and it’s been in the family ever since. They don’t sell chocolate creemees—only vanilla and black raspberry, in keeping with Earl’s tradition. Mary Lou, one of our guests, absolutely loves their black raspberry creemees! And, everyone loves Roxies! The best part of the story—you remember Will from above, well, Amanda and Will have been dating for the past three years! ❤️

Champlain Valley Mushrooms |
Our weekly delivery of gourmet mushrooms from Champlain Valley Mushrooms arrived Sunday afternoon—the next morning our guests had Kay’s French-style deep-yellow crêpe-like omelettes cradling a generous interior of exquisite rusty brown cluster of sautéed chestnut and oyster mushrooms giving her omelettes an incredible flavor profile like nothing that you have ever tasted! Our pigs are just about a month old, and they couldn’t be happier. Their lineage is impressive—the sow is a Large Black Tamworth mix and the boar is ⅔ Gloucestershire Old Spots and ⅓ Red Wattle. While each breed has a distinct flavor profile, the Gloucestershire Old Spots (GOS) is a historic pig breed known for its distinctive white coat with black spots, and is a British Royal Family favorite for their tables, and our table too.

Auguste Rodin (French, 1840–1917) followed an unusual path to becoming one of the most innovative, influential, celebrated, and controversial sculptors of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Beyond literary, historical, and religious subjects, Rodin was interested in expressing human emotion. This should be an impressive exhibition!

The Hyde Museum—Transformations
Transformations: The Art of John Van Alstine, June 11 - September 18, 2022. John works primarily with granite and steel mediums in a large-scale format. He is known for stone and metal abstract sculptures exhibiting exceptional balance and poise. In 2008, Van Alstine was one of only fifty artists to have his work chosen to be display at the 2008 Summer Olympics. In 1976, he earned a Master of Fine Arts from Cornell University. Having never been to The Hyde, this sounds like a great introduction!
