Great Books About Business with Just a Click
Your link to success begins at the library. With each week of "In The Know," The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County will directly connect you to a business book or magazine that will inspire, teach, inform, or elevate you, professionally and personally.
This week:
The Elements of Choice:
Why the Way We Decide Matters
by Eric Johnson
The Elements of Choice is a guide to the inner workings of how decisions are made and an essential toolkit for helping others make decisions better. Plenty of books dwell on the faults in our decision-making or offer advice on how to make better choices. The Elements of Choice goes one step further and explains how we can design better end-to-end decision-making processes.

Seduction is made illegal in Ohio
From History: Ohio passes a statute that makes seduction unlawful.
Covering all men over the age of 18 who worked as teachers or instructors of women, this law even prohibited men from having consensual sex with women (of any age) whom they were instructing.
The penalty for disobeying this law ranged from two to 10 years in prison.
Ohio’s seduction law was not the first of its kind.
A Virginia law made it illegal for a man to have an “illicit connexion (sic) with any unmarried female of previous chaste character” if the man did so by promising to marry the girl. An 1848 New York law made it illegal to “under promise of marriage seduce any unmarried female of previous chaste character.”
Georgia’s version of the seduction statute made it unlawful for men to “seduce a virtuous unmarried female and induce her to yield to his lustful embraces, and allow him to have carnal knowledge of her.”
These laws were only sporadically enforced, but a few men were actually prosecuted and convicted.

Today is Earth Day!
Did You Know?
The date was chosen to appeal to college students.
-
The April 22 date was selected in part because it fell between colleges’ spring break and final exams, and because in 1970 when Earth Day was founded, college students generally were the most motivated to engage in environmental activism.
Earth day went global in 1990.
- About 20 years after the concept of Earth Day was created in the 1970s, the campaign began to spread internationally. The 1990 Earth Day demonstration included efforts from about 200 million people in 141 countries, according to the Earth Day Network.
About a billion people participate in Earth Day.
- Each year, it's estimated that about a billion people participate in Earth Day in their own ways, big and small. That makes up about 15% of the world's population. This also makes Earth Day the largest secular celebration in the world.

Three Priorities to Keep America's Innovative Edge
The U.S. has long led the world in technological advancement. A close partnership between government, academia, and industry is the vibrant engine that has powered an innovation ecosystem that has secured America’s leadership role in setting rules and standards around the globe.
The Internet, for example, was developed from the technical foundation laid by the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET), which was established by the United States Department of Defense’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are based on a new technology called mRNA that allows a person’s RNA to produce a vaccine, with key early contributions from researchers at the University of Pennsylvania.
Despite accomplishments like these, countries like China, Japan, the European Union, South Korea, and others are quickly closing in on the U.S.’s lead, spending record amounts on research and development (R&D) to bolster their innovative economies.
