Autism Kits for First Responders
Palos Park Police officers heading out on patrol now take with them a Sense-ational Kit to accommodate any sensory needs . These kits can be used to comfort individuals who need help calming down or communicating during challenging situations. The kits contain items like noise-canceling earphones and sunglasses to help calm people dealing with sensory overload during emergencies.
Palos Park Police received funding from the Palos Park Police Foundation to enhance this project with wristbands for children that will help first responders identify children and their parents more quickly. The database can also provide personal details, such as that child's likes and interests, as a way to help first responders interact with the child.
Police Commissioner Dan Polk said, "Our kits will be useful for police and firefighters responding to an emergency, as flashing lights and sirens can provide sensory overload to children and adults with autism or without.
The autism kits come with instructions for the police officers on how to order replacement fidget toys and other devices as necessary. The signs of autism and knowing effective ways to approach a person on the autism spectrum can guide an officer and other first responders who may encounter a person with autism in the performance of their duties.
