Investing in Staff Excellence!
Training, training, and more training!
In late June, all of our adult clinicians attended training in Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy, or CT-R.

CT-R is focused on empowering those with serious mental health issues to live the life they want to live. This therapy is effective for individuals who are often non-compliant or disengaged with treatment, struggle with communication, and/or have hallucinations and/or delusions that prevent meaningful connection with others.

Thanks to Dr. Aaron Brinen, one of the model developers, for coming all the way to Alaska to train our staff.
Clinicians in our Child & Family continuum are trained and certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or TF-CBT.

Our bachelor's level clinical associates, who provide wrap-around support services and skill development in the community, can't get certified in TF-CBT, but they still need to understand it for their work with clients to achieve the goals clients and their therapists have developed.

So in June, our wrap-around team spent an afternoon learning the concepts of TF-CBT in a customized training to support them in their daily work with youth in the community.
Save the Date: Fairbanks Open House!
We'll be holding an Open House in Fairbanks on August 26th, from 4- 6 pm. The event will take place at our Adult outpatient clinic at 1423 Peger Road. Community members are invited to stop by to learn about our expanded programs in Fairbanks, including Adult Mental Health Residential Treatment, Mobile Crisis, outreach to individuals experiencing homelessness, and our new Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Eilson Air Force base. Plus, get an update on clinic and medical services and tour our adult clinic!

Hope you can join us!
Expanding services to at-risk youth:
SAMHSA Grant Award
Alaska Behavioral Health was recently notified of a successful grant application through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Child Traumatic Stress Network. The Alaska Child Trauma Center at AKBH received a Category III service delivery grant to expand access to behavioral health through a concentrated outreach effort to reach children and families in Alaska impacted by trauma.

The outreach program will work with schools, the POWER Center youth drop-in program, and other partners to identify and engage families needing trauma-focused services. Alaska Behavioral Health will provide a variety of evidence-based services to a diverse population, from ages 3 through adulthood.

This 5-year, $2 million grant will serve a total of 1900 children. More details can be found at https://www.samhsa.gov/grants/awards/2021/SM-21-010.

The Alaska Child Trauma Center was founded in 2005 and has been a member of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network ever since.

Peer Support Training sessions are coming up!

Peer support is a growing field within mental health. Peer Support Professionals are individuals who identify as being in recovery personally (mental illness diagnosis, history of trauma, and/or addiction) or as a family member of someone in recovery.

Alaska Behavioral Health offers free training that can lead to becoming a certified peer support specialist. Evening, weekend and week-long training sessions are scheduled in Anchorage in August, as well as in Wasilla, Fairbanks and Juneau this fall!

For more information, visit peer support training page or contact Jen Galvan at jgalvan@akbh.org.
Mental Health Mosaics

Mental Health Mosaics is a project of Out North, a 35-year-old Anchorage-based arts organization and radio station aimed at amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities. Mosaics uses art, journalism, and conversation to foster a deeper understanding of mental health and wellness through a variety of cultural and social lenses. The goal of the project is to destigmatize conversations around mental health and provide people with the information and inspiration to drive positive change.

How to get involved

Share your story. Maybe you want to record a conversation between yourself and someone you know focusing on some aspect of mental health. Maybe you want to do a formal interview with a journalist. We could also work together to collect audio to show others in the community what your lived experience is like. We’ll figure out together what’s most comfortable for you and where it might fit in the series.
Share your knowledge. If you don’t feel comfortable being recorded, share knowledge that you think should be included in the podcast, ideas we should consider, or people we should connect with.
Create art. Art can be anything -- a drawing, a poem, a photograph. Because not everyone learns through conversation or journalism, we’re both soliciting artworks and will host healing-focused facilitated art events. Get in touch to find out more details.

If you are interested in participating, you can reach Anne Hillman, Mosaics Project Director, at anne@outnorth.org or by phone or text at 907-297-8255.
