What’s Happening?

As summer heats up and the pandemic diminishes, the Green Box team is working on various elements of the production process. It is wonderful to be able to plan in-person shoots again, and as the summer progresses we hope to do a few interviews, both with our experts on issues such as combat trauma and military history, and with family members of the Sugar Baby crew. The final schedule is not in place yet but we will keep you posted.

Holly has been working intensely on both research and fundraising. We’re in the process of finishing up some major grant applications and Holly has spearheaded these efforts. The biggest is for an NEH (National Endowment for the Humanities) grant, which if we could get it would enable us to finish the film fairly quickly and with all the bells and whistles we would ideally like to have. We have met half of our goal to raise $10,000 by Sept for several key interviews which may complete our shooting. Jim too is focusing his efforts on fundraising, and of course speaking to groups about his book, his father’s story, and the film. Jim loves speaking to interested groups and engages audiences, young and old, in this project that both fascinates and educates.

Vicki is working on the first draft of the script for The Green Box: At the Heart Of A Purple Heart. This first pass is by no means the final narrative product, but it will give a sense of the narrative arc of the story, and reflect the history, science and expertise of our participants. Because this is a documentary, the whole team knows that some elements may change a little as new pieces of the story emerge… that’s both the fun and complicated aspect of a medium that is constantly seeking deeper understandings of the project at hand.

We have decided that the historical elements of the story will be told both with period stock footage and cutting edge animation. We feel that this will brand the film in a unique way and will draw in a broad audience. We are presently speaking to animation houses and they are excited about helping us bring the past to life in a powerful and engaging way.

We hope everyone is able to emerge from isolation and enjoy the summer. Stay cool and look for updates as we move forward. Thanks for your on-going support and interest. Be Well.
