METANOIA SCHOLARS COMPLETE STEM INTERNSHIPS

Metanoia Youth Leadership Academy (MYLA) students; Travez, lzayiah, and Princess recently completed MUSC's Teen Science Ambassador Program (TSAP). The Initiative encourages young people to pursue careers in the STEM fields through hands-on research exploration, career preparation, college readiness, and mentoring. Each of our MYLA scholars met the 3.0 GPA requirement to qualify for the six-week program. They had the opportunity for on-campus learning and resources, but due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the sessions continued virtually.

This year Izayiah has the opportunity for a paid internship through the same program. He will be making $12 an hour, working 10 hours a week. He plans on saving what he makes from his internship to pay for college. Princess takes from this experience a deeper understanding of STEM fields and a network of support built during her internship that will benefit her after she graduates. Travez is looking for other intern opportunities and is thankful for his experience with TSAP. He tells us that it has opened his eyes to the ambition of studying pharmacology and biology at the same time.

Although the program transitioned from in-person to vitual last fall, the students still had a full experience. "The partnership was available to switch from brick and mortar to virtual without compromising the program. I was impressed with the ability to be so nimble and still create a space that explores the stem field," says the MYLA Director of Operations, Stacy Brown. Congratulations scholars!

NEW HOME ON HUGO

We have recently completed the renovation of a new home for quality affordable housing on Hugo. The project was completed in partnership with The Charleston County Community Development Department and the Lowcountry Alliance for Model Communities utilizing funding from the SC State Ports Authority. Since our inception, Metanoia seeks to hire qualified contractors that are reflective of the communities we serve. This home was completed by JW Constructio n. JW Construction is a Black owned father and son company owned by John and Trey Willis.”

WELCOMING ALONZO TO THE TEAM!

We want to introduce you to a new member of our team! Alonzo Grooms has joined on as our new Metanoia Youth Leadership Academy High School Coordinator!

Alonzo tells us that, "Metanoia to me is a calling and a fulfillment of service and compassion to others. When I learned of this position, it aligned with my past life and work experiences and my heart. I have a passion for aiding in the development of our future leaders. To me, the work of Metanoia embodies what the Bible teaches in Galatians 6:22 ‘Carry each other's burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.’ We are not only working together to cultivate future leaders but also revitalizing the community."
