CLAS welcomes new staff

CLAS is excited to welcome Julio Beltrán as its new Administrative Assistant!

A native of Ecuador, Julio holds a Bachelor of Business in International Business & Exchange from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador and an MA in Latin American Studies from Ohio University.

Julio brings invaluable experience to the position, having worked for several years in administrative roles with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Human Mobility and with the Secretary of Higher Education, Science, Technology, & Innovation, both in Quito. Julio speaks both Spanish and Portuguese and is a proud capoeira practitioner.

In his role as Administrative Assistant, Julio will support CLAS programming through fiscal processing, travel coordination, event organization, and marketing and communications.

The fight for Nicaraguan self-determination

Origins OSU has published a short-form article entitled "The Sandino Manifesto and the Birth of the Nicaraguan Revolution".

The article, written by Miami University graduate student Craig Verniest, describes the resistance of revolutionary leader Augusto Sandino to U.S. intervention in his country and highlights how much work remains to be done for Sandino's dream of a democratic Nicaragua to become reality.

Coming This Fall: Dancing with Devils

Be on the lookout for Dancing with Devils: Latin American Masks Traditions, a constellation of free, public programming coming to OSU this fall!

Activities will include exhibitions, mask making workshops, artist talks and roundtables, dance performances, and much more! In the meantime, learn more about Latin American masks and their role in cultural and religious festivals by visiting OSU Libraries' online exhibit.

Dancing with Devils programming is sponsored by K'acha Willaykuna: Andean & Amazonian Indigenous Art & Humanities, in collaboration with the Barnett Center for Integrated Arts & Enterprise, the Center for Latin American Studies, and OSU Libraries.

Textos Híbridos, Vol 9.1

Textos Híbridos, a journal dedicated to the critical study of the Latin American chronicle from the 19th century to the present, has just published its latest volume. The website navigation has also been redesigned, with support from CLAS in its capacity as a Title VI National Resource Center.

In addition to several articles and reviews, Volume 9.1 features a chronicle by Vicente Alfonso, winner of the Carlos Montemayor Fine Arts Award for Literary Chronicle (Mexico). The volume header features photographs by freelance American photographer David Lauer of the Rarmuri Holy Week celebration.

Volume 9.2 will be released in the fall.
