We’d like to extend a warm welcome to our Fall 2022 cohort of newly admitted students.  Over the next 2 months, they will be hard at work attending orientation sessions, mapping out their curriculum plans, and enrolling in their first courses.  Since this is their first Student Newsletter, we’d like to take a moment to explain the various ways the program stays in touch with our students.

We know the feeling of trying to locate multiple emails at once, so we’ve centralized our program’s communication to help you find important information. In the newsletter, you can expect to find important dates, course enrollment info, practicum updates, useful tips, events, job opportunities and much more.

While the newsletter will be sent to your @berkeley email, archived newsletters are available on the “Newsletter Archive” page of the OOMPH Student Gateway site.  The Gateway site is OOMPH’s home on the web and is a great place to start whenever you have questions about the program.  You will find contact information for all OOMPH staff on the Team Directory page.

Students will also receive “Announcement” emails from the program (also sent via Constant Contact, like this Newsletter) for more time sensitive items.

Lastly, you can also expect to receive course related emails from your teaching teams via bCourses and general email communications from Berkeley Public Health and the University.

Enrolling in Over 6 units (Approval Needed)

As we approach Summer 2 and Fall, we would like to send a reminder on the policy around enrolling in more than 6 units. The goal is to make sure you will be academically successful, please review the following eligibility requirements: 

• You must complete 3 semesters of breadth courses and 18 units in the program. This includes having resolved any Incompletes in required breadth courses (W142, W250, W200E, W200F, W200G). 
• You must have a cumulative GPA of  3.3 or greater.
• You must receive approval from your faculty advisor.

Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) Waiver Period & Deadline

SHIP WAIVER DEADLINE: July 15th

All waivers received between July 16, 2022, and August 15, 2022, will be subject to a late fee of $75. Absolutely no waiver applications will be accepted after August 15, 2022.

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not waive SHIP by the hard deadline of August 15, 2022, your CalCentral account will be billed $3,044 for Fall 2022 and you will be enrolled in SHIP.  These actions cannot be undone after the hard deadline.

As registered students of our Online MPH program at the University of California you are required to meet the university’s health insurance mandate. Registered UC Berkeley undergraduate and graduate students (including Online MPH students) are automatically enrolled in the Berkeley Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) as a way to meet this mandate. You will find important information to help you understand SHIP, important deadlines, and how to waive SHIP in this document.

1st Year On-Campus Summer Visit

For student enrolled in W200E, your on-campus Summer Visit starts next week!  We will be sending a separate email out with important Summer Visit information by the end of the day today.  Please stay tuned.

Comprehensive Exam

The Summer 2022 Comp Exam week is June 25th- July 4th. Summer 2022 Comp Exam students should have received an invitation to begin the Comp Exam prep process. Students taking the Fall 2022 Comp Exam will receive an invitation to begin the process by the end of July. Please reach out to Evan with any questions about the Comp Exam: evg48@berkeley.edu.
