Repairing homes and rebuilding lives since 1988.

Dear Patti,

The RT-AFF Board of Directors is changing. We are grateful for Andrew Dumont's leadership for the past 2 years. Scott E Brideau was elected Chair of the Board, and Dawn Wilson, Christy Plunkett-Barese and Shanton Kittler serve with Scott on the leadership team. Please read below to learn about Andrew's accomplishments as chair and the introductions of two of our newly elected members - Don Metcalf and Elizabeth A. Zembruski. We are grateful to all of our board members who volunteer their time and expertise to guide RT-AFF.

National Rebuilding Day (NRD) is April 29, 2023, and our program staff are out in the field meeting homeowners and assessing their homes so we can match their needs with NRD teams. Would you like to become a partner and put together a team for National Rebuilding Day? Please email or call me at 571-933-6429 for more information.

Our RT Express volunteers are adding projects to their to-do lists too. If you'd like to share your skills and join our RT Express group please complete a Volunteer Profile and we'll add you to our Volunteer Opportunities email list. You can volunteer occasionally, or you can volunteer weekly - whatever fits your schedule. Most of our RT Express work is done during the week but we are scheduling one Saturday project a month to accommodate volunteers' work schedules. If you have specific questions about volunteering, please call our office or email us at info@rebuildingtogether-aff.org

I'm really proud of all the work we have been doing and my heart is filled by the notes and letters of gratitude from homeowners we have helped thanks to your support.

Fannie Mae Volunteers Partner to Assist Burke Seniors

Volunteers from Fannie Mae joined RT-AFF to help Pedro and Ana during Fannie Mae’s SERVE impact month. The team of volunteers were excited to get out from behind their computers and help make Pedro and Ana’s home safe and take care of deferred maintenance. Pedro had been a handyman and took a lot of pride in maintaining their home but due to severe health problems he had to stop working and is no longer able to tackle the maintenance issues.

The Fannie Mae volunteers worked alongside skilled RT-AFF volunteers who mentored and trained them how to make a variety of home repairs. Read More....

Andrew Dumont Retires from RT-AFF Board

Andrew Dumont joined the RT-AFF Board in 2016 and became Chair in 2021 after serving as Vice Chair for two years. Andrew was a key member of RT-AFF’s leadership team for the NeighborWorks America Excellence in Governance (EIG) Program and has helped RT-AFF achieve lasting and adaptive change by creating the framework and process for our strategic planning. He transformed the way the board operates and made high level strategic and critical decisions.

“Andrew was passionate about our mission and took every opportunity to improve Rebuilding Together-AFF,” said Patti Klein, Executive Director. “During his tenure he increased his leadership role and created an inclusive and positive environment for all who served and are served. We are grateful for his leadership in our mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives and wish him the best as he moves on to new volunteer opportunities.”

Welcome to Two of our New Board Members

We are welcoming four new members to the RT-AFF Board of Directors who will bring diverse expertise and insight to our work. We'd like to introduce two of the four new members today, and we'll introduce the other two in our next newsletter.

Don Metcalf has been in the mortgage and banking industry for 30 years and currently works for Mutual of Omaha Mortgage as a Home Equity Retirement Coordinator providing financing to seniors which can allow them to age in place, protect their assets, and provide them a better life. He is strongly committed to his community and has served his civic association for 20 years, was a board member for Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce and was very involved in youth activities in his local school district as part of YMCA Adventure Guides, Lake Braddock High School as well as Chairing social events in his community.

Don grew up in an old house that always needed work and learned a lot about home repairs and maintenance working alongside his father. His grandmother was helped by a group similar to Rebuilding Together and it made a great difference in her life and in her ability to stay in the home and neighborhood she loved.

“I’m looking forward to helping promote RT-AFF in our community, networking, and bringing in new supporters,” said Metcalf. “I’ve volunteered on some recent RT Express projects and enjoyed getting to know how the program works. It was rewarding to work alongside the team of volunteers and seeing how our repairs and modifications made things better for the homeowners we assisted.”

Elizabeth A. Zembruski is a partner at John & Hengerer LLP in Washington, D.C. She joined the firm as an associate in 2000 and became a partner in 2008.

Her practice focuses on regulatory and transactional matters involving energy industries. She regularly advises clients regarding a wide range of matters related to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) regulation of rates and services along with compliance matters. Liz’s experience as an attorney and her prior board experience bring great value to the RT-AFF board. Liz is a member of the Board of Directors of the Women’s Energy Network (DC Chapter). Prior to her current position as a Co-Communications Director, Liz served as a Co-Secretary for two years where she worked on governance, and diversity, equity, and inclusion issues for the organization. Liz brings legal insights and negotiation skills to the RT-AFF board.

Liz learned about aging in place by assisting her parents who live in New York. She understands that seniors want to age in place in the home and community they know and love. She is eager to work with RT-AFF to provide aging in place support to homeowners who don’t have the means or family members to help them through the process. “The cost of living is very high in our region, and a record number of baby boomers are entering their senior years,” said Liz. “I’m excited to join the board and to help seniors in our community live more safely in their own homes.”
