ALFC Weekly Update

Edited this week by Thel Ross

From your President

by Kelly Bocanegra

Our final Chapter Meeting of the year was well attended last Thursday. Membership voted to approve the proposed 2024-2025 Budget. The the slate of nominees for the 2024-2025 Board of Directors was approved as well. Vice President Membership Sue Geddes provided us with excellent information about what volunteer hours to report and how important they are. Fostering New Beginnings Chair Sue Smith presented a wonderful Educational Moment about A Man Named Harold. The Harold Edelstein Foundation generously grants us funding every quarter for our Fostering New Beginnings Philanthropic Program. His passion was caring about the homeless. Members in attendance filled out a member satisfaction survey provided by the Membership Committee. If you would like to fill one out, contact Sue Geddes. We'd love to hear from you.

It was a gloomy day outside, but inside the room was filled with beautiful yellow and black decor and lots of conversation, which brightened the day.

Please remember that even though we don't have another Chapter Meeting until August, the Thrift Shop is open year round and we all need to volunteer. It takes all of us to make it successful.

Our Annual Meeting and Installation of Officers is a little over 2 weeks away on Monday, May 13. We will celebrate a fantastic year of giving back to our community and honor our amazing 70th Anniversary of making a difference. Hope to see you there!

Kudos to our three outgoing Board members!

Thank you for your years of dedication to ALFC on the Board of Directors! Take a bow!

Guest Speaker at Chapter Meeting

by Sue Smith

Yolanda Phillips, Care Program Manager, for Aspiranet, our county partner for Fostering New Beginnings, was the guest speaker at our Chapter meeting on Thursday. She gave us a very informative picture of the services offered by Aspiranet. The goal of their program is to provide a safe and supportive living environment for youth leaving the foster care system while helping them achieve self-sufficiency and learn skills to live as adults.

In this program, youth are eligible for the transitional housing program from 18 to 24 years of age. They must be pursuing goals with regards to education, vocational training or employment. They are housed in apartments throughout San Bernardino County, usually two to an apartment, and are supported by Life Coaches employed by Aspiranet. It is a remarkable program, and we are grateful to participate in their success.

Yolanda is new to her job, hired in January, with one of her goals to increase the number of youths participating in their program. With her knowledge and enthusiasm, she should have no trouble doing that. Our audience at the meeting had lots of poignant questions which added to the enlightening presentation.
