Opportunity for Good:
Coastside Faith in Action Bay Area members have been asked to join the fight of Faith in Action members in Redwood City against harassment, eviction, and landlord neglect of their living conditions. The Redwood City immigrant leaders outlined a platform of three urgent priorities to address their housing insecurities. On Monday, June 13th, and on Monday, June 27th, the Redwood City Council will discuss an anti-displacement plan that incorporates two of the three priorities. However, the timeframe for implementation is stretched over 5 years— too long a timeframe for solving current, critical housing insecurities. The Redwood City Faith in Action leaders are asking for broad support, from beyond the Redwood City community, to advocate for a much shorter timeframe and an increase in housing department staff. Show your support by sending an email to the Redwood City Council; you can download an example draft email by clicking on this link here. For more information on Coastside Faith in Action, email Joanne Rokosky here.

UUCC "Sharing the Pulpit" Sunday, June 19th, 11am
The Touchstones Theme for June is Prophetic Imperative. We welcome Tom Devine to the UUCC pulpit on June 15th, with a sermon entitled “Church, Community, and Vision." Tom shares his thoughts on the purpose of church services — and especially of two key elements of a service—preaching and singing — in fostering community. He brings in ideas from poet-prophet-philosopher William Blake (1757-1827) about the nature of Human Consciousness, Imagination, and Vision.

Tom is a recent graduate of the Shared Pulpit class and contributes to UUCC Sunday services as our music director. Tom lives in Half Moon Bay and enjoys cooking, gardening, walking in the Coastside's beautiful outdoors, spending time with friends, and sharing music and poetry.

As a reminder, for now only 1st Sundays are in-person services at Odd Fellows Hall. For Tom's service, on a 3rd Sunday, we will be gathering over Zoom as usual for 3rd Sunday services.

Photos from Our Flower Ceremony on June 5th
UUCC held the most beautiful Flower Ceremony on Sunday, June 5th, with Esther Wallace, MDiv, presiding. Part of the ceremony included gifting Esther, a recent Starr King graduate, with her very first minister's stole. Please enjoy the photos, taken by Diana and Phil. Here are the words Bill Heavlin spoke as he presented Esther with her new stole:

"In accordance with UUCC’s deep love and appreciation for you, we would like to present you with this UU minister's stole. Maybe it’s your first; anyway, it’s the first UUCC has ever given. We’re moved by your generosity, your heart, your wisdom, and your commitment to making this world a better place through your words and by your actions. And, whatever the future holds, I hope you will think of the UU Coastside Community from time to time, because we will always remember you."
UUCC First Sunday Service, July 3rd, 11am
The Touchstones Theme for July is Circle of Life. UUCC is honored to have Rev. Russ Menk from the UU Fellowship of Santa Cruz County speak on "Will This Ever End?" on July 3rd. No doubt about it, the world’s a mess.  While the pandemic transitions to a new phase, we are buried in sadness and grief of mass shootings, wars, politics, and climate change. Where can we find hope? Will this end—or is the THE end? Our ancestors knew not to mistake a season for an eternity, but what can we do now? Is hope to be found—or generated?

Rev. Russ Menk graduated from Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California with an MDiv degree in 2013. Prior to his call to ministry, Rev. Russ worked as a middle manager in the aerospace industry in Utah for 29 years. Along that path, he earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA. Rev. Russ grew up in Texas (a 6th generation Texan) where he met and married his wife Jackie 40+ years ago. They currently have three small rescue dogs. Rev. Russ was ordained by the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Santa Cruz County on March 16, 2014. Now living in Santa Cruz, he continues to pursue his love of life-long learning, walking on the beach, and not shoveling snow.

As with all our First Sundays since May, UUCC will be meeting in-person at Odd Fellows Hall in Half Moon Bay. Our masking protocol seems to be working since no one who has attended our in-person services has caught COVID. As a reminder, UUCC requests proof of vaccination and booster for those who attend our in-person services to protect our cherished seniors who attend. We will also be using an abundance of caution by requiring mask wearing for churchgoers throughout the service, with the exception of those guest at the front of the room while actively speaking.

For those wishing to access the service remotely from home, our UUCC YouTube channel will carry a livestream.
