A Message from our VP of Academics and Ed Tech

Dear Carondelet Community,

The first progress reports came out last week, which kind of signals the end of the back to school phase of the year. Classes have settled into a routine with the teachers and students launching deeper into the curriculum.

At this point in the year you are going to be blasted with some technical jargon that may be worth explaining. The words MAP testing, Panorama Surveys, and PSAT testing are all parts of the communication messaging for the September/ October season. This e-News will spend a few lines decoding the different programs and contextualize the 'why' behind these different pieces of the academic puzzle.

Map Testing

Last week you received communication that freshmen and sophomores would be taking MAP tests in English and math. This is a standardized testing system that helps us track student learning. We initially do a quick MAP test when students enter Carondelet in English to help identify both areas of strength and areas of growth to help with class placement. They will take the MAP test twice a year as freshmen and sophomores. It helps the school look at both individual progress, but also uncover trends that guide curriculum development.

Panorama

Three times a year all grade levels fill out Panorama surveys to measure engagement, belonging, and self efficacy. Combined with the MAP testing and other available data (grades, attendance, feedback from faculty and staff), the Panorama helps provide a 360 perspective of the student experience. Carondelet's mission is to prepare young women to live with heart, faith, and courage. We can only accomplish our mission if we look at them as more than just students in a classroom. Understanding their experience is an essential piece to the puzzle.

PSAT

The Pre-SAT is a practice run for the SAT (a test which remains a reality in the college admissions process). Traditionally junior students across the country take this test. At Carondelet, we provide the opportunity for our sophomores as well. This trial run for the SAT is is a valuable opportunity for our students and provides further insight into helping prepare our students for the steps beyond Carondelet.

At the end of the day every student is so much more than a survey or a standardized test. The data does help provide some compelling support and guidance for us as an institution in our mission to meet the needs of our students. We are fully aware that this is just a tiny piece in the equation that focuses on our holistic approach to learning.

Heart + Fatih + Courage = Excellence,

Elizabeth Chaponot, PH.D

VP for Academics and ED Tech
