Some of our members have expressed dismay that ALL will not be holding any in-person classes this fall. The ALL board shares this dismay but made this decision more than four months ago, when conditions were quite different. There were a number of factors at that time that led to the decision:
- We saw no signs then that the college would be fully open in the fall.
- We saw no signs that “our” space in Grossman Commons would be readily accessible to all of our members because of the adjacent construction of the STEM building.
- In this vein, we fully expected the construction of the new STEM building, and the demolition of the Science building (which has the elevator many members use), outside our “back door” to be quite disruptive.
- We were not certain that the college’s students, faculty, and staff would have established any level of herd immunity to the virus.
- We saw no evidence that our membership would be completely comfortable and safe in that environment.
Having made this decision, we subsequently agreed with the college that they could utilize that space this fall semester to accommodate their temporary needs. In summary, the ALL space in Grossman Commons is not available to us this fall and we are not paying the college a license fee this calendar year. ALL plans to return to in-person classes on campus in the spring semester, though we will also look to offer some classes on Zoom.
I hope that this clears up any questions that you may have about why we are continuing with Zoom classes. We want to get back to our classrooms as much as you do, and we also want to bring back some of our other activities and events. That being said, June Calender and the Reflections team recently issued a request for members to submit content, be it prose, poetry, photography, or artwork for the 2022 edition. Here is a good chance to see your name in print.
Enjoy your summer, and remember that ALL is so much more than a classroom and will prevail no matter what adaptations we have to make.

Time to Register for Fall Classes |

Don’t delay!
Now is the time to register!
Registration for fall classes is by mail and begins on August 23, 2021. In order to be included in the first batch of processing, your completed registration form with your check must be mailed to arrive by August 20, 2021. Later arrivals will be processed after the first group is completed.
PLEASE BE SURE YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS IS ACCURATE AND LEGIBLE ON YOUR REGISTRATION FORM.
Members will receive their confirmed course schedules via e-mail beginning August 23rd. Course coordinators will communicate with you via e-mail, including sending course information and instructions on how to enter your Zoom classrooms.
Information on open classes will be updated frequently during the registration process and throughout the semester on the ALL website www.capecodall.org. After the first week of classes, members may seek admission to classes with available space (in addition to their regular schedule) by contacting lifelonglearning@capecod.edu.

The ALL Office at Cape Cod Community College is closed temporarily for the semester, so do not attempt to deliver your registration form in person. A full schedule is two 12-week courses, four 6-week courses, or one 12-week and two 6-week courses. Please prioritize your choices as numbered on the registration form, and include alternates.

Are you looking at the fall semester course schedule and finding a course or two that tempt you but you are not sure about taking it through Zoom?
We encourage you to dive in and sign up!
|
|
As many of you already know, the coordinators have gotten quite good at using Zoom. Most of the members who tried it found it "good enough" until we can go into the classroom for face to face courses. Some ALL members have even found Zoom gives them increased convenience and schedule availability.
In addition, the Zoom Team is working on refresher and newcomer training materials to get the fall semester up and running once registration is complete.
We look forward to "seeing" you on Zoom this fall!

Call for Submissions: Reflections 2022 |
|
Reflections, our annual anthology of writing and art by members of ALL, seeks poetry or prose pieces as well as photographs and/or artwork for the 2022 issue which will be published next winter.
|
|
Send submissions for Reflections 2022 from now until October 15th. These can include poetry or prose pieces as well as photographs and/or artwork. Try to limit your written work to 1,000 words due to limited space.
After this unique year, you may have found comfort in writing and have much to say, but if you would like a prompt, we offer the following suggestions:
- The funniest thing that ever happened to me
- Tell us a secret
- An incident from a road trip
- What kept you sane during the past year

Author's Book Shares Content with ALL Course
"The Enduring Cape Cod Theater Tradition"

Coordinator Sue Mellen's interests range from culture and movie reviews to business topics. Her work has appeared in the Cape Cod Times, the Boston Globe and a variety of additional publications. Her ALL fall 2021 course shares the same content as her recently published book "A History of Theater on Cape Cod".

This fall’s ALL Catalog offers a broad range of exciting courses for members to choose from. One of them explores topics covered in Sue Mellen’s recently published book A History of Theater on Cape Cod.

When Sue relocated to Cape Cod several years ago, she returned to a place, people and things she loves. One of those is writing reviews of the arts and related topics. Another is researching the history of Cape Cod’s enduring theatre culture. Still another is joining the ALL roster as a coordinator. Her fall semester course blends all of those interests.
In a recent interview she noted “When I came back to the Cape and started doing reviews, after a long hiatus, I realized that Cape theatre had grown and evolved and deserved a book of its own.” She found “magnificent support” from the Cape theater community. An important part of her research was collecting anecdotes from families with historic connections. Equal support came from the Falmouth Museums on the Green and other Cape museums opening their archives.
When her uncle showed her a book on Cape Cod jazz, she thought “I can do this with Cape Cod theatre.” She contacted Arcadia Press with an email and within hours received a positive response. She was equally proactive about becoming an ALL coordinator.
“I had been doing a lot of presentations about my book,” she said. “I wanted to reach more people and a broader audience. The story is so dramatic and goes back to the end of the 19th century.”
The result is her new ALL course "The Enduring Cape Cod Theater Tradition". It is a course that benchmarks the importance of the July 28,1916 event connecting Eugene O’Neill and the Provincetown Players to the worldwide revolution in the arts, literature and impressionism. It tracks connections between the Cape and Nantucket’s arts community and offers anecdotes of steamer trunk childhoods.
