SSC Presents $20,000 to City for Parks and Trails
Made Possible by Bennett Thrasher Foundation and Northside Hospital Donations
The Sandy Springs Conservancy presented the city of Sandy Springs with $20,000 for parks and trails projects at the City Council meeting on June 18, 2024.
Conservancy Board Chair Jack Misiura and Development Chair Alexandra Allen presented $10,000 to Mayor Rusty Paul, made possible by a grant from The Bennett Thrasher Foundation, for an improvement and restoration project at Abernathy Greenway Park South. The funds serve as a community support matching grant to help secure state grant funding. The project is expected to begin in 2025.
Another $10,000 was presented to the city in support of Springway segment 2E trail efforts, made possible by a donation from Northside Hospital. The city is currently in pre-construction planning phase of the path project that will connect Morgan Falls Overlook Park and Orkin Lake to Roswell Road.
The Bennett Thrasher Foundation assists charitable organizations that make the Atlanta community a better place. Each year, the Foundation and Bennett Thrasher employees devote considerable resources and time towards carrying out the mission of giving back to the community.
Northside Hospital has been committed to the ongoing health and wellness of the communities it serves since 1970. Northside Hospital strives to improve our communities by supporting these areas of focus: social justice, healthy living, education, and the arts and environment.

July Trail Blazers Visit
Brook Run in Dunwoody
Trail Blazers takes us from the feature parks of City Springs to the signature park of Dunwoody! In July we’ll visit our neighbors to the east, when we tour Brook Run Park in Dunwoody, Saturday, July 13, 8:30 am – 9:30 am.
Our walk will be guided by Sandy Springs Recreation & Parks Director Brent Walker. Brent was the parks director for Dunwoody when Brook Run was developed, so who better to tell us about how it came about and all the amenities it offers! Plus, we’ll learn about SSC’s connection to the land that is now Brook Run Park.
At 110-acres, Brook Run Park is the largest park in Dunwoody. This signature park features a large playground, 2-mile loop multi-use trail, skate park, disc golf course, dog park, community garden, two artificial turf baseball fields, two artificial turf multisport fields, amphitheater, open fields, event pavilions, and the Treetop Quest adventure course.
Registration is required and space is limited.

Exploring City Green!
Our June Trail Blazers group explored areas in and around City Green with three guest guides! There's so much to see in this concentrated area.
We began with a tour of Sandy Springs' newest park, Veterans Park, guided by City Councilman John Paulson. Councilman Paulson, a Marine Corps veteran who helped vision the park and bring it to fruition. He told us about the special features dedicated to honoring our local veterans and about a 30-foot statue that is expected to be installed this year!
View the Photo Gallery!
While there, we'll got an update on road construction in the area, and Sandy Springs Conservancy and Sandy Springs Garden Club member Laura Jones will give us an update on Library Garden restoration effort.
Next we toured City Green and the outdoor public sculpture gallery without walls with our guide Linda Bain, of Arts Sandy Springs. Download the Otocast app on your smartphone for a self-guided walk of the sculpture collection and conversations with the artists!
Lastly, we visited the Marsh Creek Rain Garden, just a short walk from City Center, and learned more from Linda about the creation of the watershed garden and its sculptures.
