Family Prayer

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I : Amos 6:1a, 4-7

Don't be complacent!

  • Today’s reading from the prophet, Amos, refers to a time of great wealth in the northern kingdom of Israel.
  • This week the emphasis is on the self-indulgence of the wealthy. Amos rebukes them for their indifference to the needs of others.
  • Because of their disregard for the poor the wealthy will be the first to go into exile.

Reading II : 1 Timothy 6:11-16

Fight the good fight of faith.

  • Paul’s use of the term “man of God” in reference to Timothy is important because it is a title applied to Moses-a great leader.
  • Timothy’s position as a leader demands that he give witness to Christ and seek after virtue, especially those virtues that build up the church.
  • True teaching does not destroy communities and lead to division and arrogance.

Gospel : Luke 16:19-31

Keep your eye on God's way of life.

  • In the gospel readings prior to today’s gospel the religious leaders had rejected Jesus teachings about possessions. This parable addresses their attitude.
  • The rich man was oblivious to the needs of the poor beggar, not realizing the seriousness of his complacency.
  • The indifference of the rich man led him to an eternal situation worse than that of Lazarus on earth.

A Message from Mr. Oberdorf

Next week will be an exciting week. On 9/26, our 4th and 5th graders will be heading to the capitol, and on 9/29, grades K4-3 will be heading to Green Meadows Farm and Petting Zoo. It will be great for our students to have these learning experiences again.

Great news we have hired a resource teacher. Her name is Mrs. Sostre, and her first day will be September 22. She joins our staff with 20 years of experience in education and has filled many different roles. She has been a teacher, instructional coach, volleyball coach, softball coach, and lecturer at the college level. Mrs. Sostre is excited to join our staff, and we are excited to have her. She will be working with our students on Tuesdays and Thursdays this year.

Mr. Klubertanz has also joined our staff. He did his student teaching at SJE last year, and he is back this year to assist our students in grades 1-4. He will work with small groups of students to improve their academic skills on Mondays and Tuesdays for the 2022-23 school year. Mr. K has been a classroom aide and is working to be a classroom teacher. We are thankful he chose to continue his educational journey with our school.
