Happy Retirement Kathy!

As you may already know, our Executive Director, Kathy Young, has retired as of the end of June. During her 3 year tenure, she has overseen the building and opening of the Barn and has led a team that has transformed the campus into a vibrant and active year round community resource. She has worked hard and deserves a rest. If you’re looking for her this month, she’ll be on a raft in the Grand Canyon! She has led the organization in an exciting direction that we are committed to following.

We have hired a new Executive Director who will begin work later this month and we will be sharing details soon. In the meantime, we wish Kathy a safe and thrilling ride down the Colorado River and every success in the future!

~ Charles Alexander, President of the Board of Trustees

History Lecture Series

Ephraim Wales Taft was a land agent in Gouldsboro from 1827 until his death in 1873, who worked for John Black. His life has been studied by Reverend Charles Joy of the Gouldsboro Historical Society. Records of Taft both in Gouldsboro and in Woodlawn reveal extensive information about his work as agent and his ongoing connection with the Black family.

This talk will examine Taft the man and as land agent for the Bingham estate in the key town of Gouldsboro where John Black himself had important connections. This is a study of a significant chapter in our history through the life of a unremembered man who played an important role in consort with John Black at Woodlawn.

The Black House Museum

The Black House Museum will be open for the season starting July 10th from 9AM-3PM on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Both audio and guided tours will be available. Guided tours are only offered on Thursdays at 9:30AM, 12PM and 2PM and can be booked on our website.

Science Saturday

Tom Wessels, professor emeritus at Antioch University New England, has authored six books, several focusing on forest ecology in New England. Tom is best known for his work with forests, but he also has a strong interest in desert, arctic and alpine ecosystems.

Tom will lead a guided walk on the trails at Woodlawn, discussing the natural history of the area, how to interpret natural features and what those features can tell us about the past.

Science Lecture Series

Fireflies are well loved insects, and they serve a great role to encourage people to think about invertebrate conservation. Learn about the biology of the firefly or lightning bug.

Discover how you can transform your yard into a firefly habitat to promote their survival. Then we will venture outside to observe them and their flash patterns.

Tree Talk

Woodlawn is partnering with our district forester, Michael Jensen to present a tree talk. This walk will take place on the trails at Woodlawn and will be a combination of learning about the history of Woodlawn and learning to identify common trees found on the property.

Registration is found on the Maine Forest Service website or by
