Our day-to-day choices make a difference! Forty-three percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions are a result of choices made by average Americans. The new website, created by Haverford Township Civic Council and Friends of EAC, is a clearinghouse of climate solutions specifically tailored for Haverford Township. The purpose of this site is to serve as a clearinghouse of information for residents so that they can make informed choices as they strive to live more sustainable lives.

April 24th Transform your yard: grass removal, pollinators, & native plants, 7pm

This Darby Creek Valley Association (DCVA) and Lower Merion Conservancy on-line event will describethe reasons and ways to make small yet meaningful changes as well as resources for making bigger changes and opportunities to receive free native plant plugs through local organizations. Presenters include Michelle Detwiler from Wild About Native Plants and Jamie Anderson from Eastern Del. Haverford EAC's Recycling Beyond the Blue Bin Workshop was a success! Thanks to those who tuned in. The slides are available HERE and the recorded video is available HERE.

Learn how to properly recycle in our curbside bins, a grassroots opt-in program called, “Recycling Beyond the Blue Bin,” and options to reduce the amount of plastic packaging by refilling. Haverford Environmental Advisory Committee Members will explain what’s accepted and what is not in our curbside bins and introduce you to our opt-in program.

Spring 2024 Shade Tree Lottery

This Spring, in celebration of Arbor Day, Haverford Township's Shade Tree Commission (STC) will distribute beautiful young shade trees FREE of cost to 100 lucky Township residents. Winners will be chosen by lottery (see instructions below), with distribution on the morning of April 20th, 2024. We request that you only enter the lottery if you are available to pick up your tree on April 20th, no exceptions. As a new service, we will have Haverford High School volunteers available to help pick up and plant trees for residents who require assistance to participate in the program owing to agedisability, or financial disadvantage (e.g., lack of access to a car). Participants of this accessibility service must still be available on the 20th to receive and site their tree. Registration HERE

Residents – did you know that food waste makes up 20% of local municipal waste and can be diverted to make compost and create organic fertilizer?

Thanks to a USDA grant, Haverford Township households interested in diverting food waste (and pizza boxes) through a curbside composting service can try it out with TWO MONTHS OF FREE COMPOSTING SERVICE!

**This program is limited to NEW customers only and one per household (program limit of 600 new participants)**

Residents should directly contact EZ Composting, Mother Compost, or their composting service provider of choice to participate. For those two particular collectors, residents can easily sign up on their websites. The location of the household triggers either enrollment in the incentive program or an alert that the household is eligible for it. Other composting companies are welcome to participate in the program, at this time only EZ Composting and Mother Compost service Haverford Township.

Harvest Your Stormwater!

Rain gardens, downspout planters and rain barrels can help you harvest your stormwater, reduce runoff and the resulting pollution associated with stormwater and reduce downstream flooding. The native plants used also create habitat for pollinators. Register for an intensive in-person workshop (3/2/24 https://www.dcva.org/event-5462469) or self study at https://www.dcva.org/Rain-Garden/.

Want a Hav-a-Rain Garden?

Email address & phone # to havaraingarden@gmail.com. After that, you must respond to a signupgenius email to schedule your assessment. Only Haverford property owners (including non-profits and businesses) can request a future assessment for a rain garden - high scoring assessments qualify to be offered a rain garden and sweat-equity is required.

Don’t Let This Be Our Last Year!

Hav-a-Rain Garden has installed over 90 rain gardens in 9 years but it may all end this year if we don’t build a robust succession team. Let us know if you want to see this continue in your community. We are looking for a few more volunteers with organizational skills willing to learn how we coordinate, outreach, schedule, assess, design, order and care for plants, and stage and coordinate installation. Many hands make light work! Email havaraingarden@gmail.com and tell us you want to join our core rain garden team and keep the program going by apprenticing in 2024.

Recycling Beyond the Blue Bin

Action Priority Initiative

The Haverford Civic Council is excited to announce the approval of the newest Action Priority Initiative: Recycling Beyond the Blue Bin.

TerraCycle offers recycling funded by brands, manufacturers and retailers around the world to help collect and recycle hard-to-recycle waste. Please follow directions on what is accepted in each program. Make sure packaging is as EMPTY, clean and as dry as possible! There are drop off locations throughout Haverford township for oral care items, beauty care items, brita filters, food pouches and caps, spray nozzles, scrap metal, batteries and more! We no longer accept writing supplies, as the BIC program has been discontinued but these can be dropped off to staples recycling center. To support the new plastic bag ban we now have a bag share: "Take a Bag/Leave a Bag". Thanks for keeping these items out of our trash stream, local landfills and incinerators; while reducing tax payer costs for waste disposal services.

More recycling, reusing, donating and composting info available: see http://www.HaverfordClimateAction.org or Reduce Reuse Recycle Haverford Twp Facebook group
