Mendocino Tour 2021
by Rik Larson,
Event Chair
Photos by Collin Fat & Mike Willis
53 cars participated in the Mendocino Tour this year (tying the record 53 cars that we had in 2014) making the annual 3-day trip to the north coast. This was the first official tour in two years as the 2019 event was cancelled due to fires and the 2020 event was cancelled due to the pandemic issues.
The first Mendocino Tour was held in 1972 according to the DRIFTING Back article by Larry Wilson (his summaries are available on the SVR website). It has not been held every year but it is one of the longer running SVR events (others being CRAB, San Simeon tour, Pacific Grove tour, Christmas Party, and the Charity Auction). Lettie and I became chairs for the event in 1997 and have been at the helm every year since then. Along the way we have had Mike Willis handle the miniature golf event (taking over from Rich McGlumphy) and Ray Fiore (from Redwood Region) handling the Saturday evening dinner.
Friday Morning
The tour started at Porsche Rocklin. Approximately 17 cars showed up as we got ready for our 220 mile trip to the north coast. Kirk Bradford conducted a drivers meeting and we were off as a single group to the first pickup point at the Pedrick Produce store at Interstate 80 and Pedrick Road (just east of Dixon) where another 10 cars were gathered.
Mike and Emily Willis took care of the signing of the release forms for the 10 cars at the Pedrick location. Mike held another drivers meeting and we departed in two groups of cars so as to keep the groups manageable. Assisting in leading and sweep functions for the two groups were: Mike and Emily Willis, Andy and Debbie Simpkinson, , Kirk and Linda Bradford, and Gary Koehler and Marie Frisch-Koehler.
Friday Lunch
Just under 2 hours later we arrived at our lunch stop arranged by Ray Fiore of Redwood Region. Ray had arranged with the Pech Merle Winery to use their tasting room that is located in downtown Geyserville (which is where Ray and Cheryl just happen to live). We were greeted with the option for wine tasting and then shown to a number of tables that had been setup just for us (linens and all) to enjoy our picnic lunches.
After lunch, we left in small groups to head to the coast. Several cars stopped at their favorite wineries along the way (Husch, Navarro, etc.).
Friday Evening Social
The Friday evening social was held at the Larson's room at the Little River Inn. Toasting of the sunset just past 6 pm was held. Then it was off to dinner at the restaurant of your own choosing.
The main dining room at the Little River Inn had just been reopened (although seating in the bar was closed but ordering drinks was OK).
Miniature Golf
We had to cancel the Saturday morning miniature golf due to the threat of rain. And we had 76 people signed up for this event.
Lunch on your own
I checked out downtown Mendocino. It was not as crowded as I had seen in past years. There were plenty of parking spots available. A number of the businesses had closed due to the pandemic and it showed. Even the cannabis store did not have a line of people waiting to get in like it did in 2020. I eventually headed off to have lunch at Patterson's Pub with Dave and Chrissie Neukom, Mike and Emily Willis, Noah and Susan Bentley.
Kite Flying
Since the kite flying was scheduled to start at 2 pm, I headed out to the Mendocino Headlands to stake out my parking spot. The parking lot was in poor shape ---- lot of pot holes with water. When I parked I noticed that there was a kite in the air. But there was no wind. Well there was a wind out of the west and if you positioned yourself near the edge of the headlands you would get the updraft. Sure enough that was the Marv and Ruth Stark's kite up there………and way up there. Their efforts caused others to get their kites up and we eventually had more than 20 kites up at one time.
Saturday Afternoon Social
We returned to the Larson's room for more socializing around 330 pm. We had plenty of items to hand out since we did not have the miniature golf contest. Everyone went home with something.
Saturday Night Dinner
The optional dinner on Saturday evening at Silver's at the Wharf at Noyo Harbor in Fort Bragg was attended by 71 people (definitely a record). Ray Fiore (Redwood Region) again managed this event.
Sunday morning (with an extra hour of sleep) found many folks taking in breakfast at various places (Little River Inn guests were able to get breakfast delivered to their room but no main dining room option).
And so we completed another long standing tradition.
Sunday Night Extra
The Calvert's invite anyone who was staying over on Sunday night to join them for an open house at their place at sunset. Several folks took them up on this. I understand that the sunset was great. This is the second time that the Calvert's have hosted this 'unofficial' event at their place.
Thanks
Thanks to Mike and Emily Willis, and Ray Fiore and Cheryl Gilpin for making this a successful event. And thanks to Porsche Rocklin for their hospitality and donations.
Next Year
The dates for the 2022 Mendocino Tour are already on the SVR calendar…….mark your calendar and get your rooms reserved now for November 4th, 5th, and 6th, 2022 (and the 7th if you plan to stay over on Sunday night).

Happy Holidays:
It is hard to believe that the year is nearly over and that the Covid 19 Virus is still around causing havoc to our health and safety not to mention putting a lid on many of the club events we had planned earlier in the year. The good news is that since the beginning of this year, our scientists have developed an effective vaccine not only for adults 18 and older but now have developed one for children as young as 5 years old. With the holidays upon us and traditional family get togethers, having everyone in the household vaccinated is a good thing. For club activities such as your region’s annual holiday party, this is good news as the holiday parties for all regions seem to be in full swing.

Collin and Family Wishing All a Happy Holiday
I know that many of you are thinking about activities for next year and what is going to happen. Assuming the State of California can get the pandemic under wraps and prevent another winter surge, events for 2022 should proceed without issues. This is only my best guess and time will tell. In the meantime, if you have an event that you have had an interest in organizing or an event such as a club dinner at your favorite restaurant or a tour of one of your favorite Porsche roads, do it. Attend your region’s annual planning meeting and let your region leadership know. Your region is likely to have several members who can help.
National events for 2022 are already in the works, and include Parade at the Poconos, Werks Reunion both at Amelia Island and Monterey, as well as Treffen Broadmoor having already been announced. The full array of all nationally organized events should be coming out the later part of December or in January as the final touches on events are completed.
As your new board starts to prepare for their leadership roles for 2022, several things will be happening in the background to ensure the board has a smooth transition of leadership. This starts with either the outgoing or current club president completing the required annual region report form and sending it into PCA national. This very important document lets PCA national know who the new board of directors are, but also identifies new chairs. It also provides a place to confirm banking information necessary for the quarterly member subsidies. Lastly, your outgoing board members and chairs should be meeting with their successors to hand off all the important documents and provide guidelines for their replacements so that the new board and its chairs can start off 2022 on the right foot.
Zone Autocross Series Winners:
|
|
|
|
The Zone Autocross series held 9 Zone events in 2021 and hosted events at the Cow Palace in Daly City, Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows, and at Sonoma Raceway on the paddock. Though there were difficulties in getting confirmed dates early at some venues, each of the club’s that hosted events worked hard to bring autocrossers more events than we had in 2020 or 2019. The following winners had to compete in at least 6 of the 9 events to qualify for year end awards. Congratulations to everyone for a great season!

Zone Concours Series Winners:
|
|
|
|
After many cancellations and the re-scheduling of events due to issues with pandemic as well as safety concerns at various venues, the concours series finished up in November with a total of 6 events. This was just an amazing feat of juggling of the schedule and lots of coordination with the region concours chairs as well as assistance from Zone concours chairs Roy Schauben and Simone Kopitzky in encouraging the changes and providing support.
Thank you all for a job well done!
