Email Header for handsOn Constant Contact
Greetings!

Four years ago, when I was asked to serve on the HandsOn NWNC board, I was confident that I was fully prepared after completing board training through their Project Blueprint Board Leadership Program. Per my training, I researched the organization, talked to current board members, and educated myself on the wide array of programs offered by HandsOn. I clearly remember my first board meeting and was completely overwhelmed by what I thought I knew--and, yet, just didn’t know. It was clear to me that the board members respected each other and worked hard, while having fun.

Over these last few years, I’ve been helping the Business & Revenue committee to fundraise and specifically obtain sponsors for the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award celebration. I’m looking forward to what has become my favorite HandsOn event, which this year will be held virtually on Thursday, May 6, and streamed via their Facebook page. Please consider attending and making a donation in honor of our nominees (or your own favorite volunteer) on our website, or by texting "FC-GVSA" to 44-321. We will send a handwritten thank you card both to you *and* to your honoree as well!

The friendships and relationships that I’ve made wouldn’t have happened if I had declined that invitation to join this board 4 years ago. As my HandsOn board mentor said, “this is my favorite board to serve on." Serving on this board doesn’t feel like work at all, which makes it that much more rewarding! As the current Project Blueprint cohort begins their own learning journey this week, I'm hopeful that they'll end up in such a positive environment to serve in as well. If you are interested in providing that kind of board environment to someone in this year's group, I encourage you to contact Kathy Davis, so that you can participate in the "Speed Dating" event that serves as its capstone experience.

Yours in Service,
Natalie

Natalie Webb
HandsOn NWNC Board Vice-Chair

Ed note: It continues to be a pleasure to work with board members like Natalie! Do you want to share your love of HandsOn with our network? We're always on the lookout for guest columnists in future newsletters--just let let Amy know!

2020-2021 Nonprofit Essentials:
Advocacy and Communication
TWO PARTS:
Thursday, May 20th, 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm
AND
Thursday, May 27th, 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm
Location: Zoom

You're heard again and again--we all need to do a better job in telling our stories, especially as those stories changed over the course of the pandemic. But with whom should we be sharing? Our stories of impact deserve to be heard not just by our friends, neighbors, and funders--but by our elected officials as well. As the experts "on the ground," nonprofits need to play an active role in shaping public policy. Learn successful advocacy strategies used to advance an organization’s mission for the public good, how to measure the success of your advocacy and communication efforts, and how to address related legal, ethical and tax issues.

The course is taught by Barbara Lentz, an innovative advisor, teacher, and attorney who has been active in the nonprofit and philanthropy sector her entire career.  Barbara brings real life experiences and scenarios to her work, advising nonprofits to think creatively and work collaboratively to solve problems.  She teaches classes in nonprofits, entrepreneurship, art law, contracts, and communications, and earned both the Jurist Excellence in Teaching and Innovative Teaching Awards for teaching in higher education. Barbara serves on nonprofit and social enterprise boards, including the National Advisory Council of the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, and co-founded the Forsyth Backpack Program, which partners with public schools and local nonprofits to provide supplemental food to food insecure children in the community.  She is a graduate of Duke University and the University of Michigan Law School.

Nonprofit Essentials is a monthly series of 10 classes designed to provide the "essentials" needed by nonprofit staff, board members, and volunteer leaders to be successful in the sector. Classes can be taken individually, or as a full series, which can be started at any time. Offered in partnership with Wake Forest University's Office of Civic and Community Engagement for more than a decade, the classes are taught primarily by Wake Forest University staff, faculty, and alums. For the 2020-2021 season, all classes will be held online and divided into two weekly consecutive two-hour sessions to avoid the very real "Zoom fatigue!"

Visit our website to find out more about the full series, including dates for remaining sessions and NEW "advanced" sessions for some topics.

Our 2021-2022 Nonprofit Essentials series finishes up with one of our most popular topics--Grant Writing! Like April's Program Evaluation, we've decided to offer two tracks for this topic to help make sure that those with more experience--as well as those who have never written a grant proposal before--can connect with material that will make their task easier.

Our Advanced Grant Writing--held on consecutive Wednesdays--is designed for those who seek to increase their effectiveness in the field of grant writing. The workshop will include: Request for Proposal Analysis, Use of Statistics, Collaboration, Identification of Support Documentation Proposal Analysis and Sharpening Your Grant Writing Skills. Working in small groups, participants will have an opportunity to review and critique well-written proposals and seek guidance regarding their specific grant writing challenges.

The Advanced class is taught by Ruth Peebles, President of The INS Group. With more than 30 years of hands‐on experience in nonprofit management, project management, fundraising and organizational development, Ruth founded the INS Group in 1999 with the mission of helping federal, state, and local government agencies, nonprofits, and faith-based institutions use innovative solutions to build their capacity and sustain their programs and services. Ms. Peebles currently serves on Wake County Affiliate Board of the North Carolina Community Foundation and Student U Board of Directors. She is a founding member of the Next Generation of African American Philanthropists giving circle.
The Grant Writing class--held on consecutive Thursdays--is a practical course designed for those seeking to develop their grant proposal writing skills. Participants will learn how to: assess the "grant readiness" of their organization; how to research funding sources; become familiar with grants terminology; write a successful grant by learning the common elements of a grant proposal; and prepare to manage a grant as part of your organizational process.

These sessions will be taught by Susan Brittain, who brings decades of experience in our local nonprofit to her current private consulting and grant writing practice. Susan graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Bachelor’s degree in English, and received her Master’s degree in Education/Counseling from Wake Forest University.

Spaces Still Available for FREE Organizational Assessments!
Now that we are emerging out from the pandemic, NOW is the time to envision what a "better normal" might look like in the future for your organization. And HandsOn has two programs that can help you do just that!

With the financial support of the Clemmons Community Foundation, we have funding to offer our transformative Organizational Assessment program for FREE(!!!) to organizations located in or serving the residents of Lewisville and Clemmons.  We know that many of you are using your experience in the pandemic not just as an inflection point, but a *reflection* point, and our organizational assessment process can help you do just that. Starting with an online assessment taken by staff, board members, and/or other leadership volunteers, the assessment process provides a “snapshot” of an organization’s health so that your team can make strategic decisions going forward. After completing the online assessment, your organization will be matched with a consultant who will facilitate a half-day session to help you interpret your results, identify top priorities, and devise a plan for next steps--everything you'll need to make sure that your organization comes out of COVID-19 stronger than ever! Don't miss out on this rare and timely opportunity!

HandsOn NWNC Wins
Community Partner Service Award
from WFU's Office of
Civic and Community Engagement!

Last week, WFU's Office of Civic & Community Engagement (OCCE) announced the winners of its 2021 Service Awards, which recognize students, faculty, staff, and members of the community who have successfully and effectively worked to create meaningful social change around a particular issue, either on campus or in the Winston-Salem community. Specifically, the Community Partner Service Award recognizes a stellar community partner that contributes significantly to the vision of Pro Humanitate through their collaboration with student organizations, staff or faculty departments, courses and other community-based projects. HandsOn was deeply honored to have our deep and long programmatic partnership with WFU recognized in this way.

For years, we've worked hand-in-hand on various programs, events and learning opportunities throughout Winston-Salem. Long-standing initiatives include Nonprofit Essentials – a series of courses taught primarily by Wake Forest faculty, administrators and alums, designed to strengthen the knowledge and skills of nonprofit board members, staff, and volunteers or those pursuing careers in the nonprofit sector – as well as the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Read-In, which promotes Dr. King’s legacy of service, literacy and community empowerment for local children. We've seen that partnership grow through the pandemic, with the addition of two new programs, including the Youth Engagement Coalition, which aims to increase youth service throughout Winston-Salem, and the High-Skilled Volunteer Network, which connects Wake Forest faculty and staff with various personal or professional expertise with a local organizations looking to build or sustain capacity. We're excited about what is in store for our partnership going forward!

VolunteerNC Launches #AllinNC Campaign!

Our friends at VolunteerNC are excited to launch the new All in NC volunteer awareness campaign, with the goal of supporting North Carolinians’ most urgent needs by encouraging citizens to participate in their local communities at vital times. One way to do this is by example, so they are showcasing volunteers, voluntary organizations and urgent volunteer needs on the new site, as well as in their social media feeds. (Be on the lookout for HandsOn's own highlight this week!) We hope that all of our partners, community leaders, volunteers and will participate by providing and posting pictures and videos of volunteerism along with the All in NC logo. Enthusiastically asking, “I’m All in! Are you All in?” will give the public an understanding of our communities' needs and ways that they can get involved.

All in NC messaging, social media ideas, and links to logos, graphics and photo library can be found in the new All in NC Outreach Toolkit, which you can download from their website here. The toolkit makes it simple for you to create digital content to share with them and with your own networks. Please be sure to tag @VolunteerNC, @HandsOnNWNC, and use the hashtag #allinnc in your posts!
Let the NC Center for Nonprofits Know What Kind of State COVID Relief Funding Would Benefit YOU!

Our friends at the NC Center for Nonprofits are advocating for legislators to include a nonprofit recovery fund in the next state COVID-19 response package! Your input is essential in coming up with a plan to provide meaningful relief for nonprofits. Specifically, it would be helpful to them to know what type of economic hardships your nonprofit has experienced due to COVID-19, so they can advocate for a grant program with appropriate eligibility criteria. Examples of possible criteria could include:
·   Revenue losses during some period of the pandemic;
·   Shut-downs of operations due to COVID limitations;
·   Loss of volunteers during the pandemic;
·   Costs incurred by changing the way programs and services are provided as a result of social distancing; or
·   Increase in services to meet community needs during the pandemic.

Let them know what type of eligibility criteria for a nonprofit relief fund would make the most sense for your nonprofit and other organizations in your community. The Center has included input they have received to date in this information sheet on the need for a nonprofit recovery fund that they have shared with legislators. Stay tuned as this possibility continues to develop!
