2022 Official Commemorative Art Unveiled!
“I wanted the piece to feel cosmic and out of this world, as well as to communicate the energy, excitement and joy that the fair brings me. The fair often feels otherworldly, especially near the midway, with all the sounds, laughter, bright lights and activity. I wanted my work to represent that. ... This color palette is kind of new for me. It relies heavily on pink and green, because I was going for a youthful, sci-fi energy. ... What you also see are the neon lights from the midway reflected in the faces, communicating how bright and lively the fair is at night."
- Artist Leslie Barlow

Get Ready for Talent to Take Center Stage
Know anyone who’s been perfecting their talent and is now ready to bust out on the big stage? Auditions for the MSF Amateur Talent Contest at the Bandshell are July 25-31! Semifinalists will go on to compete during the State Fair at the Bandshell. Finalists will compete at the Grandstand Sept. 4 for more than $20,000 in cash awards – just like 2021 open division, teen and pre-teen winners did (pictured above)!

Help us find Minnesota’s most talented - spread the word about auditions!
If you caught the Amateur Talent Contest auditions and finals in 2001, you saw a star in the making! Caitlyn Smith of Cannon Falls, Minn., took home the top prize in the teen division with her vocal and guitar solo. She’s now one of the brightest rising stars in Nashville, writing songs for James Bay, Garth Brooks, Dolly Parton, John Legend and Meghan Trainor. In 2022, Smith received a nomination for New Female Artist of the Year by the Academy of Country Music Awards.

Smith returns to the Minnesota State Fair to headline Bandshell Tonight! on
Aug. 27 & 28. Read more about her journey from fair-time to big-time in this article published by The Current.
Cheeto and cheeseburger class activities
Urban Ag Day Connects Metro Third-Graders with Farms and Food
How do you teach about pollination to young students? With a cheese puff, of course!

This was just one of the hands-on lessons shared as part of Urban Ag Day, an innovative program developed to bring the farm and farmers to the city to help share the story of production agriculture. Typically held at the State Fairgrounds, Urban Ag Day was canceled in 2020 and presented virtually in 2021. This year, on May 11, the program traveled to more than 750 third graders at elementary schools in St. Paul (including Battle Creek, Chelsea Heights, Highland Park and Randolph Heights), Minneapolis (including Armatage, Barton, Cityview, Hmong International and Howe) and Brooklyn Park (Prairie Seeds Academy).

Learning stations on modern farm equipment, how farmers produce all parts of a cheeseburger, future careers in agriculture, the water cycle, what soil is and more were led by Minnesota FFA students and alumni from Dassel-Cokato, Glencoe-Silver Lake, Hancock, Morris Area, Randolph, School of Environmental Studies, Tracy Area and West Central Area.

The next week, the FFA youth followed up the in-person teaching with videos that answered the third-graders’ questions and showed livestock and farm equipment.

Thank you to the partners who joined the Minnesota State Fair in presenting Urban Ag Day - Riverview LLP, Minnesota Ag in the Classroom and the FFA chapters, and to our sponsors Culver’s, Compeer Financial and AgCountry Farm Credit Services.
Is Your Group Looking for Fundraising Opportunities?
The Minnesota State Fair offers a great way for community organizations, teams, schools, churches and other groups to team-build while raising funds. Opportunities available include working on fairgrounds sanitation clean-up teams, in the Coliseum, barns and Grandstand, as attraction ticket takers, and with our parking and Park & Ride services. Fundraising opportunities throughout the year also are available.

If you're part of a group of at least 10, who are age 16+, and are interested in raising funds by helping out at the fairgrounds, visit the Fundraising Opportunities page of our website for more information.
Get Free Admission to the Fair When You Volunteer!
Volunteers are critical to the Great Minnesota Get-Together! These essential folks help make many of our exhibits memorable and engaging. Can you pitch in? Absolutely! No expertise required - just a willingness to engage with your fellow fair fans to make the most of their day! Most shifts are two to three hours, and we'll show you what to do. Each volunteer receives a FREE admission ticket to the fair!

Here are some of the great opportunities available:

Alphabet Forest: At this favorite destination for families and children, help with photo opportunities, alphabet games and easy crafts.

The Common Table: Introducing Minnesotans to the idea of local, sustainable food, this uniquely designed destination in the Agriculture Horticulture Building needs volunteers to help visitors try the interactive exhibits.

EquiMania!™ (pictured): At this award-winning exhibit in the Horse Barn, visitors take photos on a model horse, wrap a model horse’s leg and try a variety of easy activities to learn more about horses. Volunteers do not need equine knowledge. Get a free volunteer T-shirt too!

Kemps Little Farm Hands: Designed for kids ages 3-10, this pint-size mock farm experience lets the little ones plant seeds and feed pretend animals as they learn where their food comes from. Volunteers help them along the way. Free
T-shirt, too!

Math On-A-Stick: This exhibit is a welcoming space where kids and grown-ups can explore fun math concepts. Volunteers help visitors sort, count, arrange and match with reptile-shaped tiles, colored eggs and more.

Minnesota State Fair Foundation: Summer and fair-time opportunities abound – everything from helping with mailings and rolling posters to staffing Blue Ribbon Bargain Book sales kiosks and providing donor hospitality during the Great Minnesota Get-Together.

Sign up solo or with friends and family! Thanks for pitching in to make this Great Minnesota Get-Together even greater!

A Gift of Natural Shade and Greenery
One of the most iconic features of our State Fairgrounds is the abundant shade provided by beautiful trees. While visiting the grounds last year, Jerry and Jan Albrecht noticed that we had lost several trees to severe drought. The Albrechts have a long history of being involved in the dairy programs at the Minnesota State Fair and at county fairs. They met as 4-H'ers in Renville County, ran a Holstein dairy farm near Watertown, Minn., for 40 years, and have been recognized for their many contributions to Minnesota’s livestock industry.

Longtime supporters of the Minnesota State Fair Foundation, the Albrechts gave a dedicated gift for the purchase of 15 trees. They also funded the purchase of tree maintenance and safety equipment, including a chainsaw, and for two State Fair staff members to attend tree care education programs. Decades of fair guests will benefit from the Albrechts’ gift – thank you!

Grant and Mentor Program Gives a Boost to First-Time Youth Fair Exhibitors
Committed to showcasing our state’s finest agriculture and recognizing the importance of cultivating youth experiences in the livestock industry, the Minnesota State Fair is proud to announce the recipients of the 2022 Beginning Exhibitor Livestock Learning Experience (BELLE) Grants, a program that began in 2021 and awards grants to 16 youth livestock exhibitors who commit to participating in the Minnesota State Fair for the first time in 2022.

Thanks to funding from the Minnesota State Fair Foundation, large-animal exhibitors will receive $500 and small-animal exhibitors will receive $250 each to help offset feed, animal care, transportation, supplies, lodging and other costs of exhibiting livestock at the Minnesota State Fair. Participants will also be paired with a peer-to-peer mentor to help guide them through their experience.
