Tracy's Tidbits
A note from Chapter President, Tracy Miller, Global Roofing Group (f.k.a Roofing Southwest)

NAWIC is excited to announce we will be meeting in person for our May Membership Dinner on May 12th at the DoubleTree by Tucson Convention Center. I am extremely excited to seeing everyone soon in person. We will be coming back stronger than ever!

It is that time of year again for our annual Board elections 2021-2022. This year’s Nominating Committee is Florence Bramlett, Candy Perkins, Sandy Lipe, and Tammy Minot. Please accept a phone call from one of these ladies to nominate a member or yourself to the board.

The board is planning our Executive Breakfast for June 9th. Mark your calendars ladies! Bring your executive or coworkers and share NAWIC with your colleagues. More details coming soon.

Each year NAWIC has a hole at the Cornerstone Golf Tournament. We play closet to the pin. This is a contest to raise money for our Chapter. Also, Cornerstone does not charge NAWIC to have a hole. This year we will proudly be showing off our new NAWIC Tent. Both NAWIC and Cornerstone really need volunteers on May 7th to set up, check players in, and man the NAWIC hole with the contest. Please contact me if you can volunteer.

Construction Injuries

The Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR) recently released a report tracking fatal injuries in the construction industry from 2011-2019. According to the report, in 2019 more construction workers were killed on the job than in any of the previous 9 years included in the study. In 2019 there were 1,102 construction worker fatalities which was a 41.1% increase from 2011.

Hispanic workers experienced the greatest increase in fatal injuries with an 89.8% increase over the period of the study. It should be noted there was a 55% increase in the number of Hispanics working in the construction industry which can only partially account for the huge jump in fatal injuries.

OSHA Focus Four accounted for 709 of the 1,102 deaths in 2019, or 64.3% of all fatalities in the industry that year. OSHA’s Focus Four are: Falls, Caught-In or Between, Struck By and Electrocution. Visit OSHA’s Focus Four webpage for tools, resources and training aimed at protecting workers from these hazards.
