SUBJECT: Superintendent Update

NISD students, staff, and families – we are about to start rolling. Many of our students and staff members in our bands and athletic teams have already started their year, and we are eagerly waiting to get all of our kids back on Wednesday, August 18.

As you and your family prepare for the new year, I want you to be aware of the COVID protocols we will begin the year with. Most of us have been hoping and praying that COVID would be out of our lives as our kids come back to school, but the reality is that this challenge is still with us.

Northwest ISD’s Health and Safety Protocols can be accessed here, and following are highlights of our safety measures.

We have spent much time discussing and researching what we feel are the most prudent and logical safety protocols we can put in at this time that adhere to the state’s mandates. The most important concept everyone needs to be aware of is Personal Responsibility. To completely do away with COVID, we must take personal steps to remain safe and to positively affect the safety of others. Self-discipline is what these protocols call for, and that is what we are asking all students and staff members to exercise every day.

The major points of the safety protocols are as follows:

  • For everyone who qualifies and has not yet been vaccinated, NISD strongly encourages you to do so.
  • NISD strongly encourages the use of masks while inside the schools and district buildings. We were successful with In-Person Learning last year, and we feel the masks were a large part of that success.
  • Anyone (student or adult) with a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher should NOT come to school or an NISD facility.
  • Students should not come to school any earlier than the following times (unless required to do so for athletic/fine arts practice, etc.):
  • Elementary Schools – 7:20 AM
  • Middle Schools – 8:20 AM
  • High School – 8:00 AM
  • NISD will continue to clean and disinfect classrooms, buildings, and buses.
  • NISD will continue to require frequent handwashing throughout the day.
  • Students and staff should practice social distancing when feasible.
  • As we did last year, NISD encourages all parents and caregivers to bring students to school so we can lower the number of students on buses to those who absolutely require that service.
  • Students who have COVID-like symptoms will be seen in the school clinic for assessment.
  • Parents will have the option to allow the school nurse to administer a COVID-19 rapid test.
  • If symptoms warrant or if the COVID rapid test is positive, the student will be isolated as much as possible and/or will be given a mask and requested to wear it while still at school. The parent/caregiver will be called for pick up.
  • Any individual (teachers, staff, students, or another other person in the building) who receives a COVID-19 test-confirmed diagnosis:
  • Should report their diagnosis via the COVID-19 reporting form located on the district’s website.
  • Must stay home throughout the infectious period, and
  • May return to school when all three of the following criteria are met:
  1. At least one day (24 hours) has passed since recovery (no fever without the use of fever-reducing medications)
  2. The individual has improved in symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath)
  3. At least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared
  • Students who have tested positive and are quarantined for the 10 days will receive an excused absence and will be allowed time to make up all schoolwork during that time.
  • The district will be tracking COVID cases per building via a COVID dashboard that will be on the district’s website. This dashboard will indicate the building, the number of positive COVID cases reported for that building, and the date of the last positive report.
  • NISD will email staff members and the parent/caregiver of a student if they or their student are enrolled in any class with a test-confirmed case.
  • At the beginning of the school year, NISD will not allow visitors to be permitted on campus during the school day for the first four weeks of school to create the safest environment for students and staff. All beginning of the year activities (outside of the school day), like Meet the Teacher, will occur as usual.
  • Northwest ISD is developing a tiered system for visitors in our buildings based on the community spread level as reported by the local public health departments. Once this has been developed, it will be shared with all staff, parents, and community members.
  • NISD will monitor the number of cases in classrooms, programs, and grade levels. Possible classroom, grade level, and/or school closures will be based on a formula used last year that tracked both the number and percentages of those groups.

We want you and your child to feel prepared for the new school year. Please make sure to review all the protocols. Even in the face of the existing COVID challenge, the faculty and staff members of Northwest ISD are all truly excited to get our students back into our buildings, and we are dedicated to the goal of having the best school year in our history.

Let’s all work together and take that Personal Responsibility to keep ourselves and others safe. Together, we can make sure every NISD student THRIVES this year. Have a wonderful school year!
