NEH Awards Largest Humanities Grant in South's History, McCall Library to Benefit
|

The first Honors College cohorts engaging in community oral history work: pictured are Deborah Gurt, McCall Library interim Director, Ruby Staten, Candice Fairchild, Lex McKinnell, and Honors College Dean Dr. Kathy Cooke at the Oral History Association Conference in 2019.

The University of South Alabama was just awarded its largest NEH grant ever in the Humanities, $453,000 to support two projects united under the theme, "History, Humanities, Community and Justice in Alabama." The McCall Library partnership with the Honors College is one of the major recipients of this grant, specifically the oral history and community engagement work led by interim Director Deborah Gurt and Honors College Dean, Dr. Kathy Cooke.
The funding will be used to support two new positions in the McCall Library and to build institutional processes for finding curricular and co-curricular opportunities to develop community oral history projects, as well as technical handling of oral history products for wide public access. The Archaeology Museum is the other recipient of funds under this proposal that will support the development of an exhibit and other public programs. We are delighted to receive this endorsement of our work and the critical support that will allow its continuation and development.

New York Times Digital Edition
|
|
With the help of the Honors College, the USA Libraries began subscribing to the New York Times Digital Edition in early 2020. If you have not previously used this resource, you will need to create an account by going to the Marx Library's Databases & e-Reference page and choosing New York Times Digital Edition. You'll be taken to a page asking you to search for your school.
Once you choose the University of South Alabama, you'll see a page with instructions on redeeming a complimentary NYTimes.com subscription. We have learned in the past that typing USA or South Alabama or other versions of the university’s name does not work. Make sure you type University of South Alabama.
- On-campus, click the linked word, here
- Off campus, click the Go button and you'll be directed through the library's proxy. Login with your usual credentials.
|
|
Once you set up an account, you will not need to login via the proxy again; however, your access to the New York Times Digital Edition will expire after a certain period.
When you activate your account, you should see an expiration date. When it’s time to renew your account, just complete the following steps:
-
Go to the Marx Library website
- Choose Databases & e-Reference
-
Scroll down to New York Times Digital Edition and click on the link.
- The next page says, "Activate your complimentary access." In the Find School box, type University of South Alabama
-
In the box, the second line down, click on the word "here" in the "On campus click here" sentence if you are on campus. If you are off campus, click on the Go button.
- If your pass has expired, you will need to link it with your email account. If it has not expired, you will see the expiration date for your pass.
You should be able to access the New York Times Digital Edition after having completed these steps. If not, email Kathy Wheeler at kwheeler@southalabama.edu.

McCall Library celebrates Completion of Jewish Community Oral History Project
|
|
The end of the two-year Jewish Mobile Oral History Project was celebrated on Thursday, November 18 in the Rodning Gallery with Project Director Deborah Gurt, keynote speaker Dr. Josh Parshall, and delicious baked goods provided by community members. The event brings to a close the Alabama Humanities Alliance-funded project that supported developing a community archive of interviews to explore memories and present-day experiences of this Mobile community. Honors College students took part in the event as 'conversation captains' tasked with facilitating conversation around the interview themes. The interviews are archived in the McCall Library for research purposes, and some will be accessible through JagWorks at https://jagworks.southalabama.edu/jewish_oral_hist_interviews/.
