Flu Shots and Bivalent COVID-19 Booster Available at Garland Public Health Clinic

This year's flu vaccine and the bivalent COVID-19 booster are now available at the Garland Public Health Clinic.


Flu shots are available for adults, children and seniors who are insured. Low-cost flu vaccines for uninsured children and adults are also available.


It is recommended that individuals wait at least two months after completion of the primary COVID vaccination series or their most recent booster. For full eligibility information, visit GarlandTX.gov.


Both vaccinations are available at the Garland Public Health Clinic, 206 Carver St., from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays.

Fifth Annual Garland Guzzler 0.5K Race and Oktoberfest Saturday, Sept. 24

The Garland Guzzler is back! That's right, the physically demanding 😉 and mentally strenuous 😉 race known as the Garland Guzzler 0.5K is back, live and in-person, for its fifth year!


The Guzzler 0.5K race and Oktoberfest will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Central Library, 625 Austin St.


Enjoy the post-race Oktoberfest events, food, beverages from Intrinsic Smokehouse & Brewery, live music from The Dogensteins, fun for the whole family and much more. Remember, costumes are encouraged!

Fair Fare on the Square Continues Downtown All Month Long

Fair Fare on the Square is back for a third year of fair-inspired fare and runs through Friday, Sept. 30!

Band Together on the Square Concert Series Continues Friday, Sept. 23

Downtown Garland has a diverse musical experience that will go great with your carefree summer vibe. Join us every Friday evening through September for one of the best concert series of the summer!


Our series continues with Remain at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at the Plaza Theatre, 521 W. State St. Be sure to explore Downtown Garland's fabulous array of eateries and shops before and after the show!

Every Body Yoga at the Library 2 p.m. Fridays

Adults ages 18 and older can learn the basics of yoga from a professional yoga instructor at 2 p.m. Fridays through Nov. 18 at the South Garland Branch Library, 4845 Broadway Blvd.


Attendees must provide their own blanket, towel or yoga mat and are encouraged to exercise within limits of their abilities and fitness levels.

Groundbreaking Ceremonies Thursday, Sept. 29

You're invited to the groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Fire Station No. 6 and Hollabaugh Recreation Center Thursday, Sept. 29. The new facilities are part of the 2019 Bond Program.


The first ceremony will begin at 8:45 a.m. at the site of the new Fire Station No. 6, 6450 N. President George Bush Turnpike.


The next groundbreaking will take place at 10 a.m. at Hollabugh Recreation Center, 3925 W. Walnut St.

Holford Recreation Center to Close for Renovations Friday, Sept. 30

Holford Recreation Center will close Friday, Sept. 30, for renovations. When it reopens, patrons will be able to enjoy a new recreation center and parking expansion that may include a gymnasium, fitness room, multipurpose rooms and kitchen.


The new recreation center is part of the bond program approved by voters in 2019. Construction is expected to last approximately 12 to 18 months.

City Council Meetings

Sept. 19 and 20

The Garland City Council Work Session will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19. Regular Meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St.


Boards & Commissions Meetings

All upcoming Boards & Commissions meetings can be found on the Public Meetings calendar at GarlandTX.gov.


In-person meetings have resumed, but you can continue to watch the meetings online.

Neighborhood Vitality Matching Grant Applications

Sept. 23

The Neighborhood Vitality Matching Grant program enables registered neighborhood groups, both voluntary and mandatory, to apply for matching funds for physical enhancement projects in publicly accessible spaces. These projects encourage neighbors to work together to create projects unique to their neighborhood while boosting a sense of pride and ownership. Applications are due Friday, Sept. 23. Letter of Intent forms, applications and guidelines can be downloaded at GarlandNeighborhoods.org


Jynneos Vaccine for Monkeypox

Vaccination is for prevention of monkeypox only. People with confirmed cases of monkeypox or symptoms of monkeypox are not eligible to receive the vaccine. Vaccine remains in low supply and can currently only be offered to people who meet one of the criteria listed online. If you suspect you are at high risk, you may call 972-205-3370. More information on the vaccines used to protect against monkeypox virus can be found on the CDC website.

All month long we’ll share the culture and community and celebrate those who have Made Their Mark in Garland. They include the Valle family, the very first Hispanic family to call Garland home.
