THE HUB DIRECTOR'S CORNER
On My Mind and From the Heart
As the Executive Director at The HUB I am lucky to be able visit some of our homebound senior neighbors, with the hopes of seeing how the HUB can help meet their needs. My visit to June’s house was one that I will always remember. June was at the end stages of cancer and our visit was conducted in her living room where June lay on a hospital bed where she now spent all of her time. She had been sent home on hospice and spent her days receiving visitors and awaiting the end of her time here on earth. I sat in the reflective silence, that can only be found as you connect with another person as they fight through the physical pain while remembering joy and sadness and everything thing that falls in between. I sat quietly contemplating, what could I provide for her in this time, besides a smiling face and a listening ear?

As I watched June she took a soft blanket that was next to her and rubbed it softly on her face, the kind of movement that you would see from a small child soothing themselves. That moment stuck with me and it is when The HUB started The Blanket a Senior With Love Program. We had been delivering gifts to isolated seniors for many years prior, but we changed the gifts to include a soft blanket for all the recipients.

A blanket became something that we can share with seniors. Seniors that probably have most everything they need in regards to tangible items. A way to share a gift that brings mental comfort in a time of need, a way to say that “Yes, you are not forgotten” ,by the world around you. The first year we delivered Blanket a Senior in Love gifts I was able to make a few deliveries. I knocked on a door and a very angry sounding man said “What do you want? GO AWAY!.” I said, “I have a gift for you from the community through The HUB.” There is no cost to you just a way to say happy holidays.

This large gruff man looked at the basket I was carrying and grabbed the soft blanket and rubbed it on his face gently. He began crying and told me softly that his wife was in the next room dying. That this would be her last Christmas with him and that the gift we brought was all that he and his wife would receive this year. The Blanket a Senior With Love gift and a few more days of precious time. As he rubbed the blanket on his face I began to weep as well because I knew that we had shared love and comfort with the people who needed it the very most.

This holiday season I hope that you have the joy of giving a gift to another in need and may that joy carry you through to your new year and beyond.
