PTHA News
June 26th, 2021 | Issue #13
On Monday, May 31st, we celebrated the very best of Parx Racing at the annual Horsemen’s Awards. It was great to see the crowd back at Parx on this Memorial Day, as we were able to recognize and celebrate last year’s leaders. It was an honor for me to present the 2020 Horse of the Year Award to the connections for Madam Meena. Trainer Jamie Ness and owner Michael Cox have done a tremendous job with this tough filly as she won 5 out of 9 races at Parx, including one Allowance, one Starter Allowance, and one Allowance Optional Claiming race in 2020. I would like to express my heartfelt congratulations to the winners in each division and all the other champions who were nominated. We have outstanding Horsemen at Parx, and I thank them for all of their hard work and dedication to the sport.
On a separate note, I would like to welcome our new board member, John Nash. As a longtime owner and breeder who loves horseracing an impressive resume in other sports as well, I am looking forward to working with him in the future, as he adds a new perspective to the position.
I was proud to see the turnout on Turning For Home Day, which was held earlier this week on Tuesday, June 22nd. In fourteen years of offering responsible aftercare for our racehorses, it’s incredible to see that over 3,200 horses have been assisted into a safe retirement, including a handful of my own horses, all thanks to Turning For Home. With the generous donation from Chuck Zacney and Cash is King and the Afleet Alex Stud Halter, Turning For Home Day was able to raise a generous amount in donations for our retired racehorses. Former PTHA Secretary Nicole Sasse also attended with her family to raise awareness via Alex's Lemonade Stand, continuing the Afleet Alex legacy and raising much-needed donations for childhood cancer.
Together with the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association, it was also a great day for racing with the $75,000 Turning for Home Handicaps and two $100,000 PA Bred Stakes races. Racing Secretary David Osojnak and his staff did a remarkable job to create competitive starter handicaps finishing with a Dead heat between Enough Love and Atina Salsa in the fillies race, and a blanket win photo in the boy's race, won by Thundershook.
I would like to congratulate the connections for Beren, winner of the Crowd Pleaser Stakes, as well as connections for Hey Mamaluke, winner of the Power By Far Stakes, which was dedicated to the memory of our friend, Anthony Correnti, whom we sadly lost earlier this year. The Breeder and Owner of Power By Far presented the trophy, and it was nice to see Barbara Geraghty with her family and so many other PA Breeders at the races.
As you have seen, the Parx Racing Stakes are back, and our PTHA Events Calendar is posted on our website. We have some upcoming events towards the end of the summer, including PA Day at the Races on August 23rd, Smarty Jones Day on August 24th, and Owner Appreciation Day on September 6th, and of course, we are excited to have the Grade 1 Cotillion and Pennsylvania Derby back again in 2021! In the meantime, be safe and enjoy your summer!
Turning For Home Day A Huge Success Again

The weather could have been better, but the cause is so good that nothing really was going to stop the celebration that is Turning For Home Day at Parx. It was Tuesday, with a terrific card that included two $100,000 Pennsylvania bred stakes and two $75,000 Turning For Home Starter Handicaps. There was TFH merchandise for sale and donations to be made. And the day culminated with the raffling off of an Afleet Alex stud halter after the 10th race, the second of the TFH races... Read More

A Glorious Memorial Day at Parx

by DIck Jerardi

It took until the first Saturday of June, but after the Kentucky Derby exacta was 12-1 over 26-1 (the final official result to be determined who knows when) and an 11-1 Preakness winner, 2-year-old champion Essential Quality, bet in every pool like the result was preordained, won the Belmont Stakes..

Rush to Judgement

Patience is a lost virtue in our 24/7 society. Once something becomes news, there is a mad rush to get to an immediate conclusion. It is amazing how often the initial “conclusion’’ turns out to be wrong...

Kirkpatrick & Co. Presents in Their Care: Secretariat and Sweat Taught Reid Everything She Knows

If only she knew then what she knows now. That may be Virginia Reid’s only lament as she reflects on her 49 years at the racetrack.
Reid, the wife of veteran Parx-based trainer Robert “Butch” Reid, is widely known as “Ginny.” She was only 19 when friends persuaded her to leave a job as a waitress in upstate New York to seek employment at Belmont Park. She never anticipated the great adventure that awaited in 1972... Read More

They have requested that the Commission take no enforcement action until the review is completed.

As such, the June 7th enforcement date for Magna Wave and Bemer Blankets and like devices will be placed on hold until the conclusion of the review. Be advised the regulation concerning shock wave devices remains in effect.

Ertz

New York-bred Ertz is a sweet, four-year-old filly named after Julie Ertz, the famous soccer player, who is married to famed Eagles player, Zach Ertz. She was retired through Turning For Home by trainer John Servis and owner Main Line Racing Stables. Ertz was sent to the TRRAC program at Maui Meadow Farm, where they did a phenomenal job getting her surgery and rehabilitation after she injured her knee, resulting in a short-lived racing career.  Ertz, now called “Chiara” settled into her new home last year with her adopter, Seva, and is on her way to the Thoroughbred Makeover at the Retired Racehorse Project in Kentucky this fall. We look forward to following their progress!
Cruisewithbrandon

PA-Bred Cruisewithbrandon, trained by Lou Linder Jr. and owned by Bran Jam Stable and David Clark, came into Turning For Home in 2018. She was adopted out for the first by Lighted Way Equestrian to a young adopter. She called us about a year later to tell us that she was having some financial issues, and could no longer take care of her. Cruisewithbrandon was returned and was sent to Castle Rock Farm. June, the program manager from Castle Rock, absolutely loved this mare and spent time working with her retraining and jumping. She was so loved and ridden on the farm, that June’s own son ended up being the one to adopt Cruisewithbrandon, officially making Castle Rock her forever home. TFH is blessed to have such experienced, caring Partner Farms who leave no horse behind!

26  Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." …. 28  Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth."
- Genesis 1:26+28 (NKJV)

It was great to celebrate Turning for Home Day this week.  This job that we have accepted is massive, but one day at a time we succeed in caring for our retiring horses.  I say we because it is such a group effort at each step of the way.  The passage above tells us that God has blessed us to accomplish these great undertakings.  “God blessed them…. have dominion over every living thing.”  It starts with being blessed and being created in the very image of God.
Human beings continue to amaze me regarding the great things that are accomplished.  In my lifetime there is one crisis after another that threatens to be the end of the world.  Before I was even old enough to vote we were supposedly going into an Ice Age, running out of oil, and had a population explosion that would cause mass starvation, disease, and more.  In my twenties there was the ozone layer that was dissipating, and the earth would be destroyed by solar radiation.  These things are not remembered by many today, and are not concerns, largely because of human innovations that resolved the problems.
It is inspiring to learn of the people and their inventions that turned crises and severe shortages into celebrations of abundance and increased quality of life.  Freedom brought these innovations into fruition.  Names like Norman Borlaug, Eugene Houdry, and so many others should be widely known, such awareness will inspire hope and motivate others to create the innovations of tomorrow which will move us beyond the crises of today that either cripple us, or inure us out of fear, into accepting the reduction of freedoms and rights.
Humans are a great blessing to this planet.  You can make the world a better place, and you do make the world a better place.  Do you know this?  It is true.  You are a blessing and not a curse.  You are a blessing as you bravely accept and exercise your rights that you were endowed with by God.
God help you as you learn and grow in truth and knowledge to live out the wondrous plan for your life – Amen!

14  I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. - Psalm 139:14 (NKJV)
