Council District 9 News
January 12, 2024
| |
Hello Lydia,
While we’re almost half-way through our first month of 2024, we want to take a moment to reflect back on some of the accomplishments of the past year as we ramp up for our State of the District celebration later this month.
2023 was an active and busy year for us all. Over 700 constituent issues were addressed, 31 organizations were directly invested in by District 9, and there were 20+ cleanups that removed over 60 tons of trash across our district. Millions of dollars were invested in our neighbors and we were able to deliver policy wins rooted in housing, clean and healthy communities, and safety and justice – for ALL.
You can learn more about all of these efforts, and our community’s achievements, in our 2023 Annual Report which is being released soon! Limited physical copies will also be available at the State of the District.
With gratitude,
Sean

Study of Residential Evictions in the City of San Diego
Communities with lower income, higher rental cost burden, a higher proportion of Black and Hispanic households, more single-parent households, and higher unemployment levels are more likely to experience evictions in the City of San Diego, according to a recent San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) study of residential eviction trends from 2017 to 2022. The study, “Analysis of Residential Evictions in the City of San Diego,” was published today on SDHC’s website.
The goal of the report is to establish a baseline of existing conditions and trends related to residential evictions here in San Diego. SDHC initiated the study in February 2023, as households began to face potential evictions in greater numbers upon the conclusion of federal assistance and renter protections implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.
SDHC completed the study in consultation with HR&A Advisors, a public policy firm with more than 40 years of experience in real estate and economic development.

City Heights Plaza Del Sol Mural
This is community! Last Saturday, over 100 people showed up for ArtReach San Diego's Community Paint Day at City Heights Plaza Del Sol. Youth, families, and community members of all ages volunteered their time to help paint District 9’s newest mural outside a new affordable housing complex. Thank you to Wakeland Housing for your work on the project which will house 75 local families!
We wanted to share our deep gratitude to artist Josue Roman for your beautiful mural design and to ArtReach San Diego for your management of the project. Checkout the mural when you get the chance at University Avenue and Fairmount Avenue!
