Biden-Harris Administration’s Prioritization of Good Union Jobs in NY Bight Offshore Wind Lease Sale

Following recent offshore wind milestones, the Department of Interior announced the proposed sale notice of lease areas in the NY Bight. According to DOI, the proposed lease areas have the potential to unlock over 7 gigawatts of offshore wind energy, powering more than 2.6 million homes and supporting thousands of new union jobs. CJNY is encouraged to see a number of proposed lease stipulations that would reaffirm the Administration's commitment to create good-paying union jobs and engage with all stakeholders and ocean users. Notably, we are thrilled to see a proposal that would require every reasonable effort to enter into a project labor agreement covering the construction of any project proposed for the lease area. What's Brewin' Offshore?

Climate Jobs NY's Education Fund is partnering with the New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund on an educational series about the emerging offshore wind industry and the labor and job opportunities expected on Long Island in the years to come.   This is a purely informational session to help Long Islanders understand the planned and proposed wind farms, the jobs associated with these projects, and how to get involved. The first event is called “What’s Brewin’ Offshore?” and is set for July 13th from 5:30-7 pm at Po’Boy Brewery: 200 Wilson St. Bldg E3 Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776. LI Climate & Offshore Wind Training with Healthcare Workers

On June 6, we had an intimate and interactive education session with members from SEIU 32BJ, 1199, and NYSNA. In addition to discussing the science behind climate change and New York's offshore wind projects, we talked about the way climate can impact our health, communities, and families.  The next training sessions will include members of IBEW Locals 1049 & 25, IUOE, Ironworkers, CWA, and UFCW 1500. Are you interested in setting up an education session for your local? Empire Wind Milestone and a visit to Riptides!  On June 18, the Department of Interior's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) released Equinor Wind US Empire Wind 1 and 2 Notice of Intent and Construction and Operations Plan. This is yet another momentous step forward for New York offshore wind development. There is a 30 day public comment period and CJNY will submit comments as well as organize our brothers and sisters in labor to lend supportive comments to the project. Interested in learning more? I also met with Equinor's team at Riptides on the Long Beach Boardwalk this month to discuss local impacts to the Long Beach and south shore community as Empire Wind 2 plans to interconnect through Long Beach/Town of Hempstead into the Barrett substation in Oceanside. Be on the lookout for interactive sessions on environmental mitigations and turbine views with virtual reality goggles!
