As we continue to make our way through this pandemic, we have all adapted to frequent changes even if we still don’t enjoy them! Spring is always a good lesson in change that it can be for the better with a sense of new beginnings. Vaccines also offer a spring of hope that the pandemic will eventually end. We have been adding vaccine hesitancy resources to the NBANH website and are working on additional ways to educate employees on the importance to become vaccinated. We must continue to stay focused on safety, but pushing further in our collective considerations on mental health needs of residents, staff and families, and how to maintain that important balance.
As we move closer to the Annual General Meeting and Conference, I hope everyone will be able to join us to hear speakers that will inspire and challenge us.

Enhancing Rehabilitation and Exercise Programs at Rexton Lions Nursing Home
At Rexton Lions Nursing Home, the CFHI LTC+ Program Grant money was used towards enhancing our rehabilitation and exercise programs. This choice was in response to the decline in mobility and physical deterioration in our residents since the pandemic. This was linked with activity so that together they were able to focus on strengthening individualized care plans. Over an 11 week period we were able to increase our rehab support to full time hours and purchase items that worked with their motor skills. A video was created to show the positive outcomes of how having the ability to focus time and money on this important element of care made such a difference. Our residents want to maintain their mobility and are very proud of their accomplishments. So in the long run this is a WIN WIN for the nursing home.

Pop-up Tim Hortons: A sweet surprise for nursing home residents

SAINT JOHN - Residents of the Loch Lomond Villa were greeted with a taste of normalcy last week with the sweet treat of a pop-up Tim Hortons.
Replete with an order speaker, a drive-thru window and Villa staff dressed in Tim Hortons uniforms, residents were offered as close to a Tim Hortons experience they could have while remaining inside their residence.
"We were trying to bring the outside inside to them" said Marla Chapman, owner of the MacDonald Street Tim Hortons that supplied all the materials and food.

Meet Niji, Rony and baby boy, Ezra

In 2019, Niji and her husband Rony relocated to Riverside-Albert from Mumbai, India to work at Forest Dale Home as Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN). This is Niji's story:

"Hi, my name is Niji Jose Vynthalakkaran, and I would like to commence by thanking Sergio and Vicki for giving me this chance to share my story. I moved to Riverside- Albert a small village in New Brunswick, with my husband Rony, to work as an LPN in Forestdale nursing home from Vancouver in March 2019. We both are RNs from India (Mumbai) and came to Vancouver on a student visa with a dream of becoming an RN in Canada. During the process, I managed to get my LPN license, after which I was fortunately offered a position as an LPN in Forestdale Nursing home. As you must have already noticed, I lived in metropolitan cities all my life, and relocating to Riverside- Albert has given me a new experience of living in harmony with nature.
Needless to say, working in Forestdale nursing home for both Rony and me has changed our lives significantly in a positive way. We are proud to be part of a team where everyone works together to provide our residents best care. The exposure we have got to the Canadian healthcare system here would indeed aid us to achieve our RN license with much ease.
I believe this year is special for my family as I am almost at the end of my RN course and hopefully would soon make my dream come true. Also, my husband has got his eligibility to enroll in a bridging course in New Brunswick, after which he would be a proud RN in Canada as well. Apart from all this little happiness, we have been blessed with a baby boy Ezra now three months old. We definitely miss our family back-home at this time. Still, we were a lucky couple who even got an extravagant baby shower with many gifts, blessings and prayers from this generous community which made us feel loved and special. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped us to get so far, which makes us a happy family with wonderful professional life."

Destination Canada resumes
The 16th edition of Destination Canada Mobility Forum took place on February 26th, 27th and 28th, 2021. The NBANH received over 1000 requests from people wishing to work in Canada. These candidates are all French-speaking. We selected key candidates with health care backgrounds, and uploaded their resumes to our candidate database for you to review. If you have not had the opportunity to consult the database, or if you do not know how to access it, please contact Sergio.
Job fairs
The NBANH Recruitment team is regularly participating in job fairs on behalf of our members, including a national healthcare fair that took place last month. All resumes were screened and those selected were uploaded to our candidate database.

On May 4th, UNB will be hosting 'Shaping the Debate Public Dialogue' on a sustainable future for health care in New Brunswick. This virtual public dialogue will provide a platform for critical exchange of views to nurture the provincial health-care reform process and ensure positive action that will benefit communities, the economy, and lives of New Brunswickers.

National Standards
The Federal government has formally announced the work that has been initiated for the development of national standards for Long Term Care. This work will have a significant impact on Long Term Care in all provinces. As such, we deeply encourage the sector to get involved in this process. There is a survey to document your feedback on what standards should look like. The 2021 Census is now underway

The 2021 Census is coming – We are counting on you!
On behalf of Statistics Canada, I am pleased to inform you that the next Census of Population will take place in May 2021. For collective dwellings such as hospitals, nursing homes, residences for seniors, shelters, residential care facilities, correctional facilities and religious establishments, the census starts early.
The census provides a statistical portrait of Canada every five years. Information collected through the census will provide decision-makers with data needed to forecast funding requirements and plan for services such as schools, public transportation, hospitals, residences for seniors, shelters and corrections facilities.
Since the census is an essential source of information, it must be complete and accurate. It is therefore important that everyone complete and submit their questionnaire.
Participating is easy and secure
Starting April 14 2021, administrators of collective dwellings like yours across Canada will receive an invitation letter or email from Statistics Canada asking them to complete their online questionnaire. The letter contains instructions about how to complete the online questionnaire for your facility and the secure access code required to complete it. It is important that you keep this document.
Each administrator will be required to complete a short series of questions about their facility and provide basic socio-demographic information about usual residents of their facility such as name, date of birth, sex at birth, gender, and languages. The census questionnaire will need to be completed via an online portal as soon as possible. The portal is easy to use and secure.
If you are not the administrator but you receive the letter or email in mid-April, please ensure that you pass it on to the person responsible for administration at your facility.
Participating is mandatory and confidential
By law, all residents of Canada must be counted in the census, including those living in a facility, residence or establishment such as yours. All answers are collected under the authority of the Statistics Act and will be kept strictly confidential.
Statistics Canada would like to thank you in advance for completing the census in a timely and accurate manner. You will be receiving your census collective dwelling invitation letter soon.

Creating an Inclusive Community for People Living with Dementia
New Brunswick Dementia Friendly Initiative
The New Brunswick Collaborative for Healthy Aging and Care is pleased to announce the Government of Canada’s investment in the New Brunswick Dementia Friendly Initiative pilot project, funded under the Dementia Community Investment (DCI), administered by the Public Health Agency of Canada.
While many people living with dementia reside at home, barriers such as stigma, lack of awareness, and additional social and physical barriers can make participating in activities and staying connected to their communities a challenge. This poses the risk for social isolation and negative impacts on overall health and wellbeing. In a dementia-friendly community, community members foster an understanding and awareness of dementia, and those living with the disease are supported, empowered, and included in community life.

Essential Together Learning Bundles: Essential Care Partner Education

As part Essential Together, we have curated tools and resources that support the reintegration of essential care partners from organizations across the country.
This page is about supporting health and care facilities to work with patients and patient partners to develop supportive education for essential care partners related to infection control practices. It is part of the policy guidance to identify and prepare essential care partners.
These resources provide examples of training programs and materials for essential care partners to learn about personal protective equipment and infection prevention and control protocols as well as the specific procedures in place at each organization. Some organizations provide in person training to designated essential care partners and others provide links to online training videos. Organizations may consider providing access to staff training modules on the use of PPE and IPAC protocols, where the completion of training can be tracked. It may be helpful to provide short refresher videos at each visit and to provide training materials in a variety of formats.
