With the construction industry facing a labour crisis and no national, Angela Coldwell, Jen Hancock and Tim Coldwell launched Honour the Work, a source for interactive resources and educational material, connecting Canadians to fulfilling training and careers in the skilled trades.


The website includes dozens of videos that share real-life experiences and Ontario Construction News is sharing videos each week to highlight the stories of construction workers.

Roy named CCA chair


Francis Roy has been appointed Canadian Construction Association (CCA) chair for 2024-26. Roy succeeds outgoing board chair Brendan Nobes, who led the association for two years, advancing strategic partnerships and national advocacy.


A 30-year veteran of the industry, Roy is president and CEO of Quebec-based Groupe Humaco companies. He began his career in 1994 as an estimator and project manager at Les Gypses Promark Québec Inc.

City opens energy and water reporting link for owners of large buildings in Toronto


The City of Toronto is implementing a new energy and reporting bylaw and has opened a reporting link that enables owners of large buildings to report energy and water use to the city annually. Reporting and benchmarking will support the owners in their efforts to improve environmental performance, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower operating costs, indicates a release.


In 2024, the reporting requirement applies to buildings that are 4,645 square metres (50,000 square feet) or larger, which is about 7,500 buildings in the city.

CCA conference navigates disruption, creativity and technology


“Change is the new normal,” proclaimed David Usher, keynote speaker, lead singer of the band moist and founder of artificial intelligence creative studio Reimagine AI, as he helped open the 2024 Canadian Construction Association conference in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. “Big disruption is coming to all industries.”


The singer and life-long learner shared his insights with the more than 700 attendees at this year’s conference, explaining into how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is augmenting the creative process in music as well as many other sectors, including construction.

BuildForce Canada report gives associations a ‘leg to stand on’ for immigration reform


A new BuildForce Canada report brought together different groups in the construction industry to provide some guidance as to the kinds of reforms needed to the current immigration system to help bolster the sector. The report recommends the adoption of four consensus principles by governments to ensure the construction sector can better access skilled workers from abroad in an effort to address projected shortages of skilled labour created by rising construction demands and changing demographics, said Bill Ferreira, executive director of BuildForce Canada.

Northern Ontario Contractors Optimistic for 2024 Construction Season


Northern Ontario contractors are leading the province in optimism for the 2024 construction season, buoyed by a surge in mining and institutional projects. According to the Ontario Construction Secretariat (OCS) survey, 31% of contractors in this region anticipate an increase in work, even as the overall business outlook across Ontario cools slightly compared to 2023. Challenges such as skilled labor availability and rising costs of labor and materials persist across all regions, with supply chain issues beginning to resolve.

Aecon Group appoints Jerome Julier as new CFO


Aecon Group has announced that Jerome Julier has been appointed to the position of executive vice-president and CFO, effective April 8.  


Julier joins Aecon with nearly 20 years of leadership experience in finance, strategy and capital markets with a focus on industrial businesses in the construction, engineering and transportation sectors, stated a release.

He most recently served as managing director and co-head of CIBC Capital Markets’ Global Diversified Industries investment banking practice.
