Help Us Fight HB 4072
Your Chamber has your BACK! We have been monitoring the activity of HB 4072 which requires local sales taxes to be collected/reported based on where an item is "shipped to" rather than from where the order is produced/sold. This means our state’s businesses – including vital small businesses – would need to have the ability to calculate taxes of more than 1,650 sales tax jurisdictions (Texas has the most of any other state). More than 93% of all businesses (614,000+) currently report state/local sales taxes to their single place of business at a single rate. We are asking you to take action now and write your elected official.
Early Voting For Local Elections Now Open
Early voting started this morning and runs through April 27. Election Day is May 1. There are five places up for election on the Coppell City Council, including the mayor's race, plus one seat on Coppell ISD's Board of Trustees. For polling locations and hours, visit the City's website.

The Government Affairs committee of the Coppell Chamber of Commerce recently organized interviews with the candidates. They are presented here for your education.

State of Education To Feature Local Students, Scholarship Presentation
The annual State of Education breakfast serves as a public forum for business and industry leaders to hear about the educational opportunities in Coppell and meet the students. Our headline sponsor is Coppell ISD with presenting sponsorships by Dallas College North Lake and Legacy ER & Urgent Care.

Dr. Brad Hunt, Superintendent CISD, and Dr. Christa Slejko, President of Dallas College Coppell Center, will provide the business community a better understanding of the local growth and opportunities of our schools and college from the perspective of our own leaders in education.

The floor will be open to questions from the audience following their remarks. This will be an in-person event with Zoom attendance available upon request.

Show your support for our local educational institutions and students with a sponsorship of this annual event! Contact the Chamber for more information.

Meet Texas State Rep. Michelle Beckley
Next up in the series will be Rep. Michelle Beckley on Wednesday, April 21.

Rep. Beckley was elected to serve House District 65 in the Texas House of Representatives on Nov. 8, 2018. She was inspired to run for office after attending the Dallas Women's March in 2017.

Rep. Beckley has lived in her district for her entire life. The daughter of Jim and Terrie Beckley, she attended public school in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District. After graduating from Newman Smith High School, Rep. Beckley attended Texas A&M University, receiving a degree in Biomedical Sciences in 1992.

Rep. Beckley worked in sales immediately following college, but returned to Carrollton to manage the family business, Kookaburra Bird Shop. In 2003, she purchased the shop and continues to manage it today.

Rep. Beckley is married to Martin Mikes. They reside in Carrollton with their two standard poodles, Mischief and Mayhem and cats, Max and Mika. She is an avid cyclist and has completed two Ironman Triathlons.

Her priorities for the 87th Texas Legislative Session include helping small businesses, ensuring election integrity, and working toward a balanced economic and environmental system in Texas. Rep. Beckley is appointed to serve on the International Relations and Economic Development Committee and the Elections Committee.

House District 65 comprises major parts of Carrollton and Lewisville in Denton County.

Chamber To Host Unique, High-Energy Membership Extravaganza May 11-13
While most Chambers of Commerce struggle through their annual membership drive, the Coppell Chamber of Commerce will host a “Membership Extravaganza” that is like no other. For two and a half days, more than 100 volunteers will work against the clock, and against each other, to sign up new Chamber members and create a greater community awareness of the important role of the Chamber of Commerce.

“The Chamber of Commerce is the business community,” said Chamber President Ellie Braxton-Leveen. “This brings everyone together to build their Chamber. It’s a membership-based organization but most people don’t like membership drives. With our membership events, they come together in a competitive fun setting and tell the Chamber story. When others hear about everything the Chamber does, all of a sudden you have a great deal of enthusiasm for the Chamber, and a great deal of support.”

The Coppell Chamber of Commerce Membership Extravaganza will run from Tuesday, May 11 - Thursday, May 13. For more information about how you can be involved, contact the Chamber at 972-393-2829.
