A tuberculosis outbreak in the Canadian Arctic has prompted frustration in a remote Inuit community and highlighted the persistence of an illness that has largely been wiped out in the rest of the country. The outbreak also lays bare the dismal living conditions and overcrowding in many Arctic communities, despite Canada’s status as one of the world’s wealthiest nations.

The Navy is ramping up its logistics capabilities in the High North and Arctic to better equip ships, submarines, aircraft and expeditionary forces in the region. Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center Sigonella coordinated for the fleet replenishment oiler USNS Patuxent and amphibious assault ship Kearsarge to deliver cargo and mail to Defence Munitions Crombie in Scotland and Tromso in Norway this month.

Due to global warming, temperatures in the Arctic are climbing rapidly. As a result, the treeline for Siberian larch forests is steadily advancing to the north, gradually supplanting the broad expanses of tundra which are home to a unique mix of flora and fauna. Experts from the Alfred Wegener Institute have now prepared a computer simulation of how these woods could spread in the future, at the tundra’s expense. Their conclusion: only consistent climate protection measures will allow roughly 30 percent of the Siberian tundra to survive to mid-millennium. In all other, less favorable scenarios, the unique habitat is projected to disappear entirely.

This event is hosted by The Arctic Institute (TAI). This event will include topics on: cultural security, economic security, energy security, environmental security, food security, health security, military security, and political security.

The events during the week of August 1st, 2022, will include Enhancing Arctic Science and Engineering Workshop along with Regional Development Tours and forums on the Arctic science to plan for the next 25 years of Arctic research. Participants will include scientists and engineers, Indigenous leaders, Arctic community members, policymakers, government organizations and businesses to celebrate past research success, take stock of current challenges and opportunities and plan for the next generation of collaboration and knowledge co-production that will keep Utqiagvik and Indigenous knowledge at the forefront of Arctic science and contribute to a safe and sustainable future for

the Arctic.

The Forum is organized in cooperation with Naalakkersuisut - The Government of Greenland. The Focus of the 2022 Greenland Forum will be on climate and prosperity; and, geopolitics and progress.
