Dear Covenant Friends,
Last Sunday we were blessed with a visiting professor from McCormick Seminary, an event sponsored by the Ministry of Faith Formation and the Covenant Lecture fund. Dr. Williams offered an engaging and relevant sermon on Jesus’ question to the disciples- Who do you say that I am? Afterwards, we had a delicious soul food lunch prepared by a small group of deacons, then a group of us gathered to hear the lecture. Lively conversation overflowed into the reception room afterwards.
Like many pastors, I have long been fascinated by Dietrich Bonhoeffer and his brave resistance to antisemitism in his native land. Dr. Williams’ area of study adds important context to the spiritual transformation Bonhoeffer experienced following his year at Union Seminary in New York, particularly through involvement with black theology and the Harlem Renaissance.
It was a good message to hear, a reminder that the Church can become more tethered to nation than to Jesus Christ. Who do we say that Jesus is today? How can he be seen in the suffering of a homeless person, or a new immigrant, or a prisoner with mental illness?
Thanks to all who came to listen and learn. May we be willing to hear one another’s stories and brave enough to resist hate and dehumanization of others wherever we find it.
Here are the Lenten devotions for this week.
