Still Waters Adult Day Center News & Updates
Still Waters Adult Day Center is a person centered, faith based, and activity rich center for our seniors. We provide a safe place Monday - Friday for seniors to engage with other seniors to encourage social, emotional, and physical well-being.
Central Indiana Community Foundation Senior Fund
Thanks to the Central Indiana Senior Fund for once again supporting our center. With this funding we will assure that our seniors have equitable access to basic needs and the ability to live with a sense of dignity and worth. If you haven't seen their latest webinar where they closely examined the topic of aging in place for older adults within Central Indiana it is a must read for our community. It focuses on what some of the characteristics and potential needs of older adults who want to age in place. Check out the report, the webinar recording and powerpoint slides.
Most older adults want to remain within their homes and communities as they age. This research briefly examines data trends in Indiana that relate to potential challenges and opportunities for older adults who want to age in place and continue to contribute to their communities.
Butler University students are coming back
We are excited to have our friends from Butler University come back and join us January-April. Students in their first-year seminar course are studying Music and Language Across Communication Differences and will be applying their knowledge with hands on application at our center. They are learning about music and language in relation to neuroanatomy evolution, and philosophy. At Still Waters we believe it is a valuable opportunity for young people to explore potential career paths, acquire hands-on experience, and establish professional connections that can pave the way for future success in the future.

for more information & to register for this event

GriefShare is a support group to help you move through the grief process. A GriefShare support group is a safe, welcoming place where people understand the difficult emotions of grief. Through this 13-week group, you’ll discover what to expect in the days ahead and what’s “normal” in grief. Since there are no neat, orderly stages of grief, you’ll learn helpful ways of coping with grief, in all its unpredictability—and gain solid support each step of the way.
Volunteer Spotlight- Deb McCloud
For those that may not know Deb's vision was what created Still Waters. Deb McCloud, saw the need for an exclusive senior day center 13 years ago and worked with the church and volunteers at Castleton United Methodist Church to build 'Still Waters'. While thinking of a name the 23rd Psalm kept coming up, so she thought maybe Shepherd Center, but that name was taken. When her dad passed her friend mentioned that her dads name Lamar means 'the sea' so she thought it should be something to honor him. That led her to Still Waters...which was perfect! A place that for the guests is very calm, beautiful and peaceful...but below Still Waters there is lots and lots of action which results in life!
She continues to volunteer once a week in the kitchen for our guests. We are blessed to have her continued support, love, and dedication at the center.
Join us for coffee hour at Still Waters, Nov 16th 8-10am
When I first started at Still Waters, I had an idea to bring a 'coffee hour' to the center open to the public. I just had a recent guest that lost her husband ask about where I was on this idea. It made me think that with the winter months approaching it can be frigid, dreary, and seemingly endless. It is rare to see the sun peeking out through the gray abyss of a sky. And for many seniors, inability or uneasiness about going outdoors in the cold constricts them to their home, magnifying the lackluster feel of the season. Additionally, at this stage of life, they are likely living alone or with just one other person, often lacking the simplest day-to-day chatter.
Socialization is an impactful factor that can turn that desolation into delight. I love when I run into McDonalds or the mall early in the morning and I see a handful of seniors chatting and laughing with one another. As many of caregivers lose their loved ones, they are starting a new chapter in their lives alone. This coffee hour is open to anyone that needs a friend. Someone that needs a listening ear. We will provide the warm and friendly space, coffee, and danish. Join us the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month from 8am-10am as you meet new friends.
Our first coffee hour will be Thursday, November 16th, 8am-10am at Still Waters.

Green Tomato Cake Recipe
We thought we would share Nurse Deb's favorite Green Tomato Cake recipe. After we cleaned out our garden, we hated to see the green tomatoes go to waste. So, Deb used the left-over green tomatoes and cooked us an amazing and moist cake. I will say despite its unconventional use of tomatoes, it tasted like a moist coffee cake! It's a perfect treat for anyone who wants to use up their garden green tomatoes!
Ingredients
1 cup golden raisins
2 1/2 cups diced green tomatoes
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
3 cups all-purpose flour
3 large eggs
2 1/2 cups sugar
2 sticks butter
1 cup chopped walnuts
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 °F. Grease and flour a 12-cup bundt pan. Beat 2 sticks softened butter and sugar with an electric mixer until creamy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. In a medium bowl, combine flour, cinnamon, baking powder, salt and nutmeg. Gradually add to butter mixture, beating well. (Batter will be soft.) Stir in tomatoes, raisins and walnuts. Spoon batter into prepared pan. Bake for 70 to 75 minutes, or until a tester inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool in pan on wire rack for 10 minutes. Remove from pan and let cool completely.
Aging Well: In a Holistic Lens
Art Exhibit I Conversation I Meditation

Join visiting artist Julie McColly Hill for our winter wellness series. To launch the series, Julie will share a collection of art panels that she created for the Living Well With Dementia Conference held last spring in Indianapolis. This eight-panel exhibit features two sets of images. In the first set, the artist applies a holistic perspective to unpack the meaning of Dementia Friendly Environments using the language of symbols. The second set of images is a multi-media abstract expression of the first set. The inspiration for the abstract re-interpretation came from Julie’s personal experience as a caregiver.

Julie’s mother was one of the first participants at Still Waters. She and her family successfully applied this “holistic perspective of aging well” to navigate difficult family conversations and decisions regarding her mother's plan of care. With hindsight, Julie also credits routine meditation practice as being instrumental in managing the stress of balancing work, family, and the role of caregiver.

This winter, Julie will lead a routine meditation practice on Tuesdays from 3-4:30p.m. During each session participants will explore a variety of meditation techniques and discover the foundational difference of the eastern and western approach to medicine. Suitable for people of all ages and perfect for beginners, this meditation practice is intended to be an introduction to the mind, body, spirit connection. The program is free and open to the general public. Reserve your spot today.
