Field Notes:
Beech Leaf Disease in Newport

Information from the Living Collections Manager, Joe Verstandig

A new pathogen, discovered in Ohio 10 years ago, has made its arrival in Newport. This disease, a microscopic foliar nematode (Litylenchuys crenatae ssp. mccannii), has
quickly established itself and poses a serious threat to Newport’s finest collection of trees, our beloved beeches.

Beach Leaf Disease, shortened to BLD, was discovered in western Rhode Island in 2020, where it has wreaked havoc on wild American beech (Fagus grandifolia). From there, it has spread throughout the state, including Newport, where trees in our public parks and private properties are showing infection.

Be on the lookout for details on our upcoming tour of gorgeous private properties that will be open to the public for one day only and available for you to enjoy. Bask in the gardens, cool off in the shade of their beautiful trees, and learn more about what makes these unique arboreta so wonderful. We look forward to seeing you there!
Planting the Seed of Things to Come
We are happy to announce the launch of our Fall Tree Program, seeking to help our community as a whole gain more access to trees and the shade they offer. Be on the lookout for more information in next month's newsletter and other outlets.

One of our main goals here at the Newport Tree Conservancy is to replenish and encourage the growth and spread of our urban canopy. This fall, you have the unique opportunity to be a part of this initiative.
