TUESDAY MEMO
1st grader Landen Temple enjoyed reading a book in the cedar trees last week.
Greetings!

Here it is, the last Memo of the school year. We thank you all for supporting our efforts at school each week by keeping up with this information.

Happy Tuesday,
Nelia
NOTES
APPRECIATION FOR THE TEACHER MEALS
The teachers and staff offer their sincere thanks for your effort to nourish their bodies and hearts this week! It is such a gift to not have to prepare our own breakfasts and lunches in these final, tiring weeks. Enjoying new and creative recipes and taking home leftovers make it all the better. We are so grateful for the community of support in which we work!
SUNSCREEN
We continue to spend as much time as we can outdoors, and encourage our K-8 students to apply sunscreen at midday, and/or before an outdoor activity. Students can bring their own or use supplies we have at school. If this is important to you, please make that expectation clear with your children. If you do not want us to use the variety of products we have at school, please let your child's teacher know directly. Preschool has a different set of parameters around topical applications, if you have any questions about that, please reach out to McKenna.
LIBRARY BOOKS
As we approach the end of the year we would like to collect and re-organize all of Riverside's library books as well as each teacher's classroom library. Please search your homes for any texts that might belong to us and return them.
PHOTO GALLERIES
Pictures from some events from this school year (and prior years) can be found on our website, including lots from last week's Spring Field Trips, with new images added since yesterday. The link below is now fixed, enjoy!
SPANISH SUCCESS
8th graders recently participated in the National Spanish Exam, a motivational contest to recognize student achievement and proficiency (what they know and can do) in the language. The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades 6 through 12, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Placing in the 89th percentile in her level and category, Camryn Reimert earned a Silver medal. Lydia Reimert and Sam Keith both received Bronze medals by scoring in the 79 and 77 percentiles respectively. Riley Washington, Bryn Waring, and Jeronimo Deyhle (bilingual category), obtained Honorable mentions with results above the national average.
UPDATED MIDDLE SCHOOL EXAM SCHEDULE
6-8th graders are taking semester exams this week, Tuesday-Thursday. Please help them to organize their study materials, prioritize which classes and units deserve the most of their time and attention, and to find the study strategies that work best for their learning styles. Teachers and advisors will be discussing the same intentions this week in their classes.

YEARBOOKS
The Yearbook Elective is nearly finished designing this year's memento, but unfortunately they will not be printed in time for the last day of school. We will have a copy printed for each student, at a cost of $16 each on your school store bill, unless you email Krystal by the end of Wednesday to let her know you do not want one, or that you want siblings to share one. We will let you know when they are available for pick up at school in the early summer.
MOUNTAIN BIKE CLUB
The final ride of MTB club this week will be Wednesday, all groups starting at East Burke Sports at 3:45, with experienced riders joining and supporting newer riders, then dividing into separate groups. Newer/younger group will finish around 5:00, and the experienced/older will finish around 5:45, both back at East Burke Sports.
BRING AN EXTRA BAG
We suggest that students bring an extra empty bag to school on Thursday to take home all personal items from school. This is particularly important for middle schoolers, who often resort to packing their cubbies into flimsy garbage bags when they don't have something else to use.
STUDENT COUNCIL SUMMER PARTY & DANCE
The event that President Camryn and the Student Council had planned for last Friday night has been postponed to this Thursday, June 2, from 5:15 to 6:45 and a 5-8th grade dance from 7:00 to 9:00. We are hoping to have lots of grilled food, but for this to work we will need grills and people who can grill. If you are willing to donate your grilling time and/or your grill, please email Student Council President Camryn.

If your child will be in EDP that afternoon, please email Sean specifically so that he can plan for a bigger group if necessary.
LAST DAY OF SCHOOL
This Friday, June 3, our last day of school, will be a fun day full of celebration of a successful year, with an invitation for parents to join in the celebrations in the afternoon.
  • Bike to School: students are encouraged to ride their bikes to school, as long as they are: in groups of 6 or less, elementary students are accompanied by an adult, any "follow cars" don't impede traffic flow, and the riders don't cross into the cars' lane of travel. This tradition was started by students from Guildhall, so don't let distance or elevation impede you! Have fun, and don't worry, we won't count any tardies from those making their way on two-wheels.
  • Morning: fun field day activities in mixed age groups, mostly outdoors
  • Afternoon: 6th graders will break their popsicle stick bridges for everyone at 12:15; the talent show will follow at approximately 12:45, and the the presentation of arts, athletics, chess, citizenship, and academic improvement awards starting at about 1:45 (we invite and expect parents to attend if they wish, and will also stream and record the event on Google Meet at this link); and then a final fun activity for everyone at about 2:30. If the weather permits this will be a water "fight" for all K-8th grade students, so they should come with bathing suits or clothes than can get wet, a towel, and a change of dry clothes.
  • Dismissal: It is a full day, with regular dismissal times at 3:00/3:30, and the Afterschool/Extended Day programs will run. Please email Sean or Heather if your child will attend, so that they can plan accordingly for this unique day.
PK-8 GRADUATION
Our 41st graduation ceremony will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 4. This is an event to honor the hard work and achievements of all our Preschool-8th grade students, as well as the culture of our kind and generous community that makes their success possible. The ceremony, which includes students processing through the cedars, choral performances from the porch of the house, a guest speaker, 8th grade speakers, awards for students of all ages and a presentation of diplomas to the Class of 2022 is meaningful to all of us. That day is counted as school day and we hope that every student will attend with some members of their family. Preschool and kindergarten students will sit with their parents during the ceremony, when not performing.

The ceremony will be surrounded by student artwork on display and followed by a potluck lunch. We ask all families to bring a salad or main course dish to share. Please remember a serving utensil and mark all your personal items with your name. Please also plan to list the ingredients, we will have markers and cards available if necessary. Riverside will be providing drinks and a cake. Thank you to the 7th grade parents who will be setting up the potluck, so you can simply hand your dish to one of them in the barn when you arrive for the ceremony.
SUMMER MAILINGS
There are two large pieces of mail you'll receive from us over the summer; please keep an eye out for them and respond as needed:
  • June Mailing: semester reports, summer reading/homework, life skills poster, school calendar
  • August Mailing: annual enrollment forms, school calendar
SUMMER HELP NEEDED
There are a variety of campus work projects going on this summer that could benefit from both skilled and unskilled labor. A few examples are sorting tents, refinishing the yurt floor, painting, and raising the roof on the pavilion. If you can lend a hand, please email Roy and he will coordinate with individuals.
SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
  • PreK-K Day Camp at Riverside - Marie & McKenna are hosting Friday summer camp sessions twice a month from 8am-2:30pm. Children will make art, create music, identify plants, explore trails, tend the garden, make recipes using ingredients from the garden and much more! With the exception of thunderstorms or other extreme weather, we will spend all our time outdoors. Children need to come prepared with weather appropriate clothing and nutritious meals. Each day will begin on the preschool playground.
