Brain Injury Awareness & Screening

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. Join Amanda Tower, from the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission (MRC) for an overview of brain injury and screening that BH Clinicians can utilize in their work. The connection between brain injury and behavioral health is becoming more recognized and pertinent in our everyday work. Join us as we explore the bi-directional relationship between brain injury and behavioral health, high risk populations and the importance of screening for brain injury in behavioral health settings. Understand how to identify potential exposures to brain injury and how it can support someone’s ongoing engagement in behavioral health treatments and services. Online Brain Injury Screening and Support System or OBISSS is a tool that can support providers, agencies, and community champions to identify potential exposures to a brain injury and support someone with potential cognitive impairments. Learn about the basics of brain injury, histories and populations that could indicate a potential risk for brain injury. We will also review valuable accommodations, available state services and community-based resources to support someone with a potential brain injury.

Trauma-Informed Approach for Individuals Impacted by Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)

This training series will increase CBHC providers understanding, prevalence and knowledge of intimate partner violence exposure and subsequent impacts on survivors and their children. Strategies for screening, engaging with and caring for survivors of IPV and their children will be discussed. Trainers will review the dynamics of power and control, explore tactics used by people who use violence, and take particular care to highlight the hurdles survivors face in fleeing IPV; particularly survivors living in marginalized groups. Additionally, the workshops will highlight the importance of self-awareness and reflective practice to mitigate provider bias and vicarious trauma.

Brief Introduction to Motivational Interviewing

This brief 30-minute training provides an introductory overview of Motivational Interviewing. Motivational Interviewing or MI is a method of interacting with individuals to facilitate health behavior change. MI is a shift away from telling people why they should change or how they should change. Instead, MI works to draw out from the person their ideas about why change would be beneficial and how it can be done in the context of that individual’s life.
