Beginning this month, Visit Racine County will shine a spotlight on the vibrant arts community in Racine County. From instrumental and vocal music to drama and comedy performances, there is something to enjoy nearly every week of the year. Racine County is home to a nationally recognized art museum, engaging hands-on art studios, and inspiring art galleries that showcase talented regional artists. This month, we feature the following article by Diane Carlson, executive director of the Racine Arts Council.
Founded in 1967, the Racine Arts Council (RAC) encourages, supports and advocates on behalf of emerging and established artists and artistic groups in our community. The RAC facilitates collaboration among artists and community entities.
Since I started with RAC in February 2024, we have been focused on one of our key initiatives, the ArtSeed grant program. I like to say, "RAC plants ArtSeeds to help artists grow," which summarizes the purpose of the RAC to support the vibrant art community in Racine. Applications have been received, and I am so excited by the projects planned for the coming year. I encourage everyone to please consider donating to RAC and this fantastic program. We can aggregate even small amounts into awards that make a difference.
Racine Arts Council also is responsible for the Quilts on Barns throughout Racine County along with the Lonely Instruments Need Kids (LINK) project to support music in schools.
Our top priority is to support and enhance the artistic options in Racine. Our Facebook page is active, and I am working on providing additional programs of value to the artists that work here and the Racinians who support them.
I am also one of the co-founders of Over Our Head Players (OOHP), perhaps best known for the "Snowdance® 10 Minute Comedy Festival." I saw firsthand the difference a strong arts council can make to a growing organization. OOHP is an important part of the Racine arts scene, and I am proud of what they offer artists and audiences alike. I continue to volunteer with OOHP as they begin the renovation of Sixth Street Theatre and enter their 33rd season.
Art is an important quality of life enhancement. Participating and enjoying art in all its forms, including fine arts, performing arts, written word, and more, creates a sense of community. Business, education, talent, and quality of life are interrelated, and art plays a part holding them together.
