June 2022
We just added a new vertical prayer flag to our inventory. This 5 print Gesar of Ling flag is now the largest flag in our inventory. It is 2'-4" wide x 12'-6" tall. Our single color Gesar flags have become quite popular since we started carrying them a year ago. This new flag has all five colors in one tall flag.

The legend of King Gesar has been circulating among Tibetans for over 1000 years. Little known in the West, it is the longest epic in the world. Stories of Gesar were primarily passed down in oral form but even the existing written copies, which are estimated to comprise only 10% of the epic, number 246 volumes – containing over 1.5 million lines.

Gesar, the King of Ling, represents the principle of warriorship – not in the sense of war skills but in the sense of realizing the power, dignity and wakefulness that is inherent in all of us as human beings. King Gesar’s heroic task is to overcome the dark forces, both outer and inner, that bring war and hardship and obscure the spiritual path. Gesar’s ultimate victory promises that peace, harmony and enlightenment will prevail in the world.
The confident warrior conducts himself or herself with a gentle, fearless, and open-hearted intelligence in all aspects of life.

This flag requires a strong pole at least 15 feet tall. See Poles for Prayer Flags.
The Ling Gesar Prayer Flag is particularly special to me. In 1971 I began cooresponding with a young Tibetan Lama. Lama Dawa Chhodak was attending Sanskrit University in Varanasi, India. I connected with him through the Nyingma Institute Pen Pal program which had been set up to sponsor Tibetan refugees in India.

In 1973, Lama Dawa sent me a woodblock print of the Gesar of Ling prayer flag (photo at left) which was printed at Tashi Jong Monastery in Himachal Pradesh. The artwork and symbolism on that Gesar flag struck a deep chord in me. I have been collecting, redrawing, printing and distributing prayer flags ever since.

Lama Dawa became my beloved spiritual friend. We had many adventures and he taught me so much during our 46 year relationship.

Our traditional Ling Gesar Prayer Flags depict King Gesar in the center – bearing his magical weapons and riding his winged steed Kyang Go Karka. The Supernatural Animals of the 4 directions (Garuda, Dragon, Tiger and Snow Lion) occupy the four corners. Their inner meanings represent exalted qualities of the human mind: fearlessness, dignity, confidence and unconditional cheerfulness. The text supplicates King Gesar and sings his praises. It contains mantras for overcoming obstacles and conquering enemies. King Gesar’s heroic task is to overcome the dark forces, both outer and inner, that bring war and hardship and obscure the spiritual path. Gesar’s ultimate victory promises that peace, harmony and enlightenment will prevail in the world.

THIS MONTH'S PRACTICE & NAGA CALENDARS
Nagas are water elemental beings that play a prominent role in all Buddhist schools and are venerated throughout Asia. Making offerings to the Nagas on the astrological days that are associated with their activity, can play an important role in establishing harmony and balance in the environment, as well as curing many kinds of diseases. Practitioners who regularly make offerings to the Nagas, turning them into their allies are often benefitted by increased health and prosperity. Some Nagas are Buddha Dharma protectors and play important roles in the establishment and continuity of the Dharma.
The Nagas are awake on certain days that are determined by calculations on the Tibetan calendar. These are the days (called "teb") on which Naga ceremonies are performed. There are 4 degrees (*) of "Naga Days." Only make Naga offerings on Naga days. The ceremonies can be performed on any of the Naga days but it's most important to do them on the 4 degree "tep" days. Also, it's important not to "wake up" the Nagas on the other days, when they're asleep.

For detailed information and a commentary by Acharya Lama Dawa Chhodak Rinpoche please refer to the "Di-Khor Be-kar" Naga Days section in Saraswati Bhawan's webstite. Lama Dawa Rinpoche's Audio teachings on Making Naga Offerings can be downloaded for free from Saraswati Bhawan.

Naga Offering Days for June 2022
During the fourth month of the Tibetan year, the Nagas pay particular attention to abiding by the laws of their realm. If we make offerings to them during teb days (+), then they will provide true support to us. If we make offerings to them on dok days, our offerings will turn to poison.
During the fourth month, there are six excellent days to perform offering ceremonies: June 4, 8 , 19, 21, 23 (dakini day), and the 28 (new moon). For sure, do not make offerings on June 6, 7, 10,1 2, or 14.
