“Cultivating Kindness, Relationships, and Growth for all.”
News You Can Use: March 11, 2022

Dear CCGS Families,
We had another great week of school! Our students were hard at work with all of their learning and we added so many goal pictures to our board this week! This week our third grade students began their IAR testing, and our other students have been so kind and quiet in the hallways so they can focus. We are very excited about our Dreambox Leaders for the month of February!
Congratulations to:
Kindergarten: Anderson C., Parker J., Addison M., Ainsley P., Brooklyn H., and Isaac F.
1st grade: Noah R., Dominic C., Jacob S., Zak R., Keenan B.
2nd grade: Parker M, Colin G. Ryan A., Kaydence H. Liam L., Collin A.
3rd grade: Anthony O., Kylie M., Josiah R., Hollis Z., Emma O

The district is looking for feedback on the student/parent handbook. The handbook can be found at this link. If you have feedback please email Tracy at [email protected].

Each week I offer a way for you to share a celebration or ask questions on this survey. If you would like a specific reply, please add your name so I can get back to you. If you comment about a specific teacher- I send this directly to them and I know it really brightens their day!

  • Spring Break is March 21st-March 25th: We have one week of school until Spring Break begins! Next Friday our early childhood students do not have school and we have a one hour early release at 2:25 p.m for all the K-3 students. Our a.m kindergarten students have a regular day of school and our p.m students get dismissed at 2:25 p.m.
  • Third Grade Student IAR Testing Begins: This letter went home from through email from the third grade teachers today, but in case you missed it, please click here.
  • Please send an extra outfit for your child: We are still going outside for recess and go out when it is 15 degrees and above. Additionally, as the snow melts, we do have lots of mud and dirt. Having an extra outfit for your student's locker will be very helpful!
  • Car Rider and Walker Reminders: Please have your red or green name showing for pick up time whether a walker or a car rider. K-3 parents, please make a right turn only into the rear lot at the end of the day. Please do not block the driveways on Mill and Orange Street so those families can get out of their driveways. Thank you for always having your signs ready!
  • Lost and Found: Is your child missing an item? Have them check the lost and found in the main hallway! We will be donating items to the local food pantry prior to spring break.
  • Lunch: Students have 3 lunch choices every day. The menu is sent home with every student and is also on the Y115 app. You can also click here to find that!
  • Devices: Please send your child's charger to school each day. It is also the responsibility of the student to charge each night. We have several students coming without charged devices and no way to charge.

Have a great weekend!

Mrs. Hamm

Author/illustrator Adam Rex will be visiting our kindergarten through sixth grade students on April 14th! We will celebrate all things humor & picture books with him, and get a drawing demo, too! If you'd like to order one of Adam's books, please return the order form that came home this week to your school library by Thursday, March 17th. On that same form you will find information about our bubblegum-hair contest (no, not real gum, don't worry!) - and if your family would like to participate, please see this link!  https://padlet.com/sjmchugh/669t4koic5wx
Excited for all of the laughs we will have together with such a beloved creator of children's books; thanks for supporting the fun!
This student has been following the four CCGS Cornerstones this week! She will be leading the school in the pledge next week.
Mrs. Pynenberg's p.m. class has been working as a team and showing kindness to others. They were our golden platter winners this week and will get a recess with Mrs. Hamm or Mrs. Anderson next week.
Mrs. Guzaldo's Classroom Highlight!
It is hard to believe we have already been a class family for 120 days! Each day we have a new opportunity to learn from each other and deepen our connections!

We were thrilled to welcome Pirate Week in our classroom as we learned about the “ar” spelling pattern. We made our weekly Phonics Pal: “Captain SmARty”, played a game called “Walk the Plank” and completed a “Write the Room” activity while wearing our pirate eye patches.

In math we continued working on double digit addition with and without regrouping. We use our place value blocks to help better understand this concept. We love to chant “convert alert” (a student idea) when we have a group of 10 ones that need to be converted to a tens block!

By far the highlight of each day was when it was time to read our “Who Would Win” book. Two animals meet in a battle, and we learn about the animal’s natural defense mechanisms to help us pick who the winner will be. We were all shocked with the outcome of many of the fights!

1st grade is the BEST place to be!

When Should You Start Reading Chapter Books With Your Kids?
Scholastic.com/parents
You might be eager to make the leap from picture books to chapter books during story time with your kids — after all, you probably have favorites from your own childhood!

It’s a good idea: Reading chapter books aloud to your child introduces them to equally enriching yet more complex storytelling that helps develop inferential reading skills. You can start reading early chapter books as soon as preschool, says Karen Baicker, publisher for family and community engagement at Scholastic.

“You are building listening skills and the awareness of an arc of storytelling,” says Baicker. “Introducing chapter books will also excite young children who have seen their older siblings reading them.” However, here are four things to keep in mind as you make the transition.
