New Jersey Council for Exceptional Children
Important Information

|
For many years the New Jersey Council for Exceptional Children (NJCEC) has held its annual conference in the spring (March through June). We have recently become aware that the PARCC testing will occur during this time frame. Since districts must administer the PARCC assessment within the time frame that our conference is held, we believe this is not a viable option during this inaugural statewide testing year.
Therefore, NJCEC will jointly sponsor a conference with NJPSA (New Jersey Principals and Supervisors)/TMI (The Madison Institute). This reading and brain-based literacy learning conference will be held on February 5th 2015 in Monroe Township. Detailed program and registration information for this conference will follow shortly.

Recently, I had the privilege of traveling to Washington, D.C to attend the CEC National Legislative Conference. It was a rewarding experience to be able to network and collaborate with CEC members and CAN coordinators from all over the country. I also had the chance to hear many presentations from passionate teachers, administrators, congressional experts, and CEC leaders that helped me to better understand the crucial work that CEC does for children with exceptionalities. I am unable to pass along all of the important information that I learned to you. However, I would like to share some statistics that reaffirmed my commitment to being a member of The Council for Exceptional Children and why I continue to advocate for our children's rights as your CAN coordinator.
IDEA Infants & Toddlers w/ Disabilities Program
-
- There has been a 37% decrease in Federal funding share per child since 1999
- IDEA Preschool Program
- In 1992 Federal Funds/ Child = $804
- In 2014 Federal Funds/ Child = $471
- National Center for Special Education Research
- Funding cut by 30% in 2011 resulting in 75% fewer grants
- Students with disabilities are 2x more likely to receive out of school suspension then their non-disabled peers.
- 1 in 4 boys of color with disabilities are suspended
- 1 in 5 girls of color have been suspended
- There are more than 3 million students with gifts and talents who require specialized instructional services. Unfortunately, access to these services depends only on local funding.
- High Achieving students from disadvantaged backgrounds compared to their advantaged peers are twice as likely to drop out of school and or less likely to graduate from college.

Recently I came across a woman whom I think has some creative ideas for students with special abilities. Her name is Carla Butorac and she posts ideas weekly for educators of students with special needs. One idea of hers that I think could be used in a variety of ways is her use of a slinky. For a quick video of this idea, see her You Tube video by clicking here. She also has some other short videos that you can view regarding transitioning, visual supports, and other worthwhile information.
