Research in the Time of COVID-19: Case Studies from 400 Years of African American History Fellowship

How has COVID-19 impacted research methods? This webinar will explore this question with a group of four anthropologists and historians to provide insight into their research on the Underground Railroad in 19th century Maryland. Speakers will discuss the ways Covid-19 restrictions have changed their research process, and provide an overview of the skills, methods, and research facilities they found most useful for their research.

This session's speakers are fellows for the 400 Years of African American History Fellowship, funded by the Maryland Department of Commerce Office of Tourism and the Legacy of Slavery in Maryland program at the Maryland State Archives. This fellowship aims to nominate Maryland historic sites associated with the Underground Railroad for the Network to Freedom program run by the National Park Service.

Virtual Lecture – The History of American Tall Case Clocks: Still Standing Tall in America

It’s about time! Join guest presenter Steve Sieraki, HA Volunteer Educator and Curatorial Researcher Tony Zecca, and Robin Matty, HA Curator of Collections for a full discussion and demonstration about tall case clocks!

This three-part program begins with a short presentation by HA Curator Robin Matty on the remarkable Faris-Shaw-Chisholm tall case clock held in Historic Annapolis’s collection. Created by three of Annapolis’s most well-known craftsman, this clock provides a glimpse into their detailed art. Next, Steve Sieracki explores the history of the American tall case clock. Steve will discuss the evolution of the tall case clock from its humble beginnings in the 16th century, to its zenith in the 1920s, to its current state in 2021. Topics will include mechanical and stylistic changes through 400 years of history. Steve will also provide information on successful and unsuccessful variations in these clocks over time. Following the lecture, watch a hands-on, live demonstration on the disassembly of a tall case clock for moving and setting up a tall case clock in its new home with HA Volunteer and Lecturer, Tony Zecca.

The Secret Garden Tour, brought to you by the Hammond-Harwood House, will take place June 5-6.

The 2021 tour features private gardens in the Historic District. Murray Hill, the area between West Street and Spa Creek, holds a beautiful collection of homes built in various periods and architectural styles. The 130-year-old community with its tree-lined streets is the perfect setting for an afternoon of garden exploration. All the gardens featured in 2021 epitomize the goals of the home gardener: to have a beautiful space filled with flowers, trees, shrubs, grasses, and other garden elements, a space that is a pleasure to live in and inspirational to work in.

New Report! The Impact of Virtual Programs on Revenue Generation for Cultural Organizations
Cuseum is excited to announce the publication of a special report on digital revenue streams in the cultural sector. With survey data from 500+ museum professionals, the report examines how museums and cultural organizations are generating and diversifying their revenue channels through the use of virtual programs. As cultural organizations continue to navigate the changes ushered in by the pandemic, Cusuem hopes that this resource offers insights and guidance on the emerging trend of monetizing digital programs.

Internship Opportunity - Outreach and Virtual Exhibition Intern
The Maryland Center for History and Culture seeks an outgoing and motivated pre-graduate or recent graduate to help with an upcoming exhibition on civil rights history in Maryland as an Outreach and Virtual Exhibition Intern.

A successful candidate will have an interest in Maryland’s African American history and culture, public history, community engagement, strong organizational skills, and be comfortable working with basic web platforms. This internship will be virtual with the potential for onsite work and meetings as needed. Starting date is July or August 2021 and will continue through the opening in February 2022.

2021 Maryland Arts Summit Lineup Announced
and Registration Open!
The Maryland Arts Summit, now in its third year, is presented by and for the Maryland arts sector and curated by the Maryland State Arts Council, Maryland Citizens for the Arts, the Fine Arts Office of the Maryland State Department of Education, and Arts Education in Maryland Schools.

The 2021 Maryland Arts Summit: Art of the Community will hold six live streamed sessions on June 3 - 4, 2021 focused on current topics in the Maryland creative sector, interspersed with creative bursts of art-making and performances. All together, the Summit will elevate voices within Maryland’s arts communities.
Non-Profit Economic Development Recovery Grant Program
There's still time to apply for AAEDC's Non-Profit Economic Development Recovery Grant Program.

Supported by approximately $1.9 million from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, this program aims to help non-profit organizations that create/sustain jobs while serving the larger community with a mission focus on the areas of economic development, economic recovery, health and human services, and housing. The grant must be targeted to support the workforce and operations of an organization that has been impacted by the pandemic economy, especially those non-profits that have not benefited from state and federal COVID-19 relief programs.

Historical preservation and heritage organizations that can justify their local economic development impact are eligible to apply.

Applications will be accepted until May 28.
