In celebration of the Class of 2024, an award-winning medical journalist, and leaders with expertise in serving patients in vulnerable and underserved populations, and working with government-funded health insurance programs will offer words of wisdom for graduates at their commencement ceremonies.

Patricia Polgar-Bailey

School of Nursing: Patricia “Tish” Polgar-Bailey, FNP, MPH, PsyD

The renowned co-editor of “Primary Care: Interprofessional Collaborative Practice,” the sentinel book used for over 30 years in advanced practice nursing programs across the nation, Polgar-Bailey is a recognized leader in the national nursing community who provides primary care and psychotherapy for members of our most vulnerable and underserved populations in central Virginia.

Toyin Ajayi

School of Health: Toyin Ajayi, MD, MPhil

Before becoming the co-founder and CEO of Cityblock Health, a comprehensive health care provider and technology platform that services low-income Medicaid populations with complex needs, Ajayi served as chief medical officer for Commonwealth Care Alliance, which serves individuals eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta

School of Medicine: Sanjay Gupta, MD

A multiple Emmy-award winning chief medical correspondent for CNN and host of the CNN podcast “Chasing Life,” Gupta is a practicing neurosurgeon who plays an integral role in CNN’s reporting on health and medical news for all of CNN’s shows domestically and internationally.

MAGIS Society Induction Ceremony to Recognize Excellence in Teaching

The 20th Annual MAGIS Society Induction Ceremony will honor Stefano Vicini, PhD, and Ajeet Vinayak, MD. The ceremony will take place on May 16 at 5:00 p.m. in the Goldberg Auditorium at MedStar Georgetown. The MAGIS Society was created to recognize commitment to educating physicians at Georgetown.

Penn Nursing to Honor Roberta Waite, EdD, RN, with Outstanding Alumni Award

Waite

The University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing has selected Roberta Waite, EdD, RN, Dean of Georgetown’s School of Nursing, as the recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Alumni Award. The award recognizes a Penn Nursing graduate who is a leader with an outstanding career that has advanced the profession of nursing. Waite obtained her MSN in psychiatric mental health nursing and then completed a postdoctoral research fellowship focused on vulnerable women, children and families at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She earned her BSN and EdD in higher education administration leadership from Widener University in Chester, Pa.

Kumar Inducted as a Fellow in the Royal College of Physicians

Princy N. Kumar, MD, MACP,  has been inducted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. The May 1 ceremony in London followed her election to the RCP in summer 2023 for her “important contribution to our profession.” Kumar is senior associate dean of students at Georgetown University School of Medicine, where she is also a professor of medicine and microbiology. In addition, she is Chief of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. (Photo l to r: Sarah Catherine Clarke, RCP president with Kumar.)


Seliby Perkins Named AAFP Vaccine Science Fellow

LaTasha Seliby Perkins

LaTasha Seliby Perkins, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine, has been named a Vaccine Science Fellow by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). In addition to mentoring from AAFP physician mentors and previous Vaccine Science Fellows, new fellows gain practical hands-on experience in vaccine science and policy by meeting with experts in immunization, public health, policy groups and vaccine manufacturers

GUMC faculty members (any track or rank, including faculty employed by our health system partners [e.g. MedStar] who hold Georgetown faculty appointments) are encouraged to apply for Community Engagement RADIANCE (Respect, Advocacy, Diversity, Inclusion, ANti-racism, Collaboration, Equity) Grants.
